Historia
In the year 2475, the remnants of humanity have taken to the skies, inhabiting massive domed cities that hover five miles over the ruined ecological disaster of old Earth. The Powers That Be, in their infinite wisdom, decided that the few million people left deserved to live their best lives, so they gave each sub-orbital platform its own theme and legally enforced tech level.

Rollicking Multi-faceted Tale
Revisado: 12-27-24
This was a fun-to-listen to tale full of many great call backs and enough action to keep me engaged. The narration added great depth to the pacing and tone of the story.

God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Historia
A United Nations relief team in a small village in the Congo makes an alarming discovery. An unknown force is leveling the evolutionary playing field. Men, women, and children have been reduced to a dull, catatonic state. The environment surrounding them—plants and animals—has grown more cunning and predatory, evolving at an exponential pace. The insidious phenomenon is spreading from a cursed site in the jungle — known to locals as the Kingdom of Bones —and sweeping across Africa, threatening the rest of the world.

Fast paced read/listen
Revisado: 11-10-24
This was a fun story to listen to - though I almost quit after the Kane incident. The author’s notes at the end were interesting and helped ground some of the more fantastical parts.
This was my first experience with many of these characters so the references to their previous exploits was a little frustrating.
The reader did well though I felt like the accents, while helpful and entertaining, weren’t as consistent. But there was good pacing and appropriate modulation.

Historia
You are born to a king, but marry a tyrant. You stand helplessly as he sacrifices your child to placate the gods. You watch him wage war on a foreign shore and you comfort yourself with violent thoughts of your own. You play the part, fooling enemies who deny you justice. And slowly, you plot. But when your husband returns in triumph, what then? Acceptance or vengeance—death follows both. So you bide your time and force the gods' hands in a wretched game of vengeance.

Why do we revere ancient heroes
Revisado: 10-10-24
This other perspective version of the machinations of the Trojan war and the major players wipes away the worshipful stories and gives a grittier view of the realities of the time. Kings, princes, and great warriors are exposed as the brutes who participated in these battles. Everything usual gives these battles the patina of righteousness and ignores how freely men were more monstrous than any fantasy beasts imagined.
This book was sad. And best described how women had to bend but not break to survive.

Great misdirection and justice
Revisado: 08-30-24
I took me a little bit to finally bite on this book but it was so good! The characters were all believable. And I loved how all of this was from a woman’s perspective.
The reader did a good job with the pacing, though there were few times where it was a little difficult to differentiate all of the characters in a scene. Other than that I think that there was great emotive reading.

Who knew
Revisado: 08-24-24
This was an enlightening journey into a part of WWII that as an American we never heard about at all. I enjoyed the story and the reader did a great job with the accents.
One thing I did not care for was the crescendo/cliff hanger cut offs throughout the book. It felt at once TV drama-esque as well as poor pacing.

Historia
When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches' tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

Wicked of the Norse
Revisado: 07-21-24
As I sit here trying to reclaim the tearless composure I had before, I would like to encourage you to give this book a listen. The story was slow to build, but much like a snowball rolling down the hill I found the tale larger and faster and brighter. If you believe that there are two sides to every tale and that each villain is usually a hero from their perspective you will enjoy this book.
Reader was exceptional.

Historia
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

I won’t lie - you will be bombarded with so many sad statistics that it is difficult to fathom. There will be points made that some people may not agree with …. But to them I say, “Then show me your data…..”
This is a tough listen if only because it feels so insurmountable. And it reminds me of all of the times I apologized for bringing up some form of bias. Or the times I was basically a pick me girl assuming that girls are just being wussy. Understanding that the world is not designed for me or my gender is a tough pill to swallow. But I also believe that there is hope. To (poorly) paraphrase Maya Angelo, “Do your best. When you know better, do better.”

Paradise Lost
Revisado: 06-18-24
What a fantastic story, full of both loss and gifts, misery and hope.
The story was well told. The plot device of retelling the same story at different times felt both pedantic but also illustrative. Like any historical story, I knew/know the sad ending. But maybe one time it could turn out differently.
