Historia
Daniel Martin has never forgotten his childhood encounters with Frank Watkins, the man who built his family a summer home out of cardboard and plywood. Frank's gaze was oddly confusing, as if he was attempting to discern the proper way to behave because he didn't know how to respond in a human manner. Since Frank obviously wasn't an alien, young Daniel thought maybe the man was crazy. In the end, Daniel would learn the terrifying truth about Frank Watkins. And as an adult, Daniel is about to discover there are more of them out there.

Gave it an honest shot, couldn’t get into it
Revisado: 06-18-21
After reading mixed reviews I decided to give this book a shot. I’ve listened to some good books, with not so great narration and was still able to enjoy the book. But the narrator for this one definitely distracted from any type of suspense or scare. I agree with everyone else who said his voice was more suited for a children’s book. I gave it 3 hours and for the life of me could not get into it. Just slugged on and on, with no type of real thrill or suspense. Maybe it gets better, but it’s a no for me.

Historia
Two words: the bullet. That's all it takes to shatter her life. Caroline Cashion is beautiful, intelligent, a professor of French literature. But in a split second, everything she's known is proved to be a lie. A single bullet, gracefully tapered at one end, is found lodged at the base of her skull. Caroline is stunned. It makes no sense: She has never been shot. She has no entry wound, no scar. Then, over the course of one awful evening, she learns the truth.

Let’s clear one thing up real quick!
Revisado: 06-07-21
Let me get one thing out of the way first, if you’re gonna name a book “the bullet” with details regarding a bullet throughout. I’d assume the author would actually do a little research about bullets and firearms first. Once a bullet is fired, it no longer resembles the same intact shape it once did before being shot. Now to keep this simple, the author made it very clear the bullet residing in the main characters neck WAS shot out of a gun, and that’s how it ended up in her neck. So since that’s the case, there’s some big errors here with the author’s knowledge of firearms and bullets. The book frequently mentioned the shape and length of the bullet, and how it tapered into a slight point at the end (describing an intact, never shot bullet) so since it was shot, it should look like a little mound of lead in her neck. Not a perfectly shaped bullet. That was SO IRRITATING to me. Despite that part, I enjoyed the story. It kept me interested until the end. I agree with many other listeners that it took a turn down an unbelievable road. And I found myself rolling my eyes a lot at the fact that the main character basically turned into a completely different person. I hated the Will character, I hardly believe a doctor would act and talk the way he did. Not that he was a cheater, but the fact that he seemed incredibly childish and unprofessional. This author irritated me in many ways. The story could have been fantastic, it just seemed like towards the end they let someone else take the reins and completely botched the rest of the book. And the bullet thing being complete ludicrous.....the narrator was great though!!

One of those guilty pleasures
Revisado: 05-26-21
Let me start off by saying I did greatly enjoy this book, but I’ve read and listen to enough books now to realize there are books that’s you can compare to a 4 course meal, and others that resemble more of a guilty pleasure trip through the McDonald’s drive thru. And this is one of those. The book kept me interested the whole way through, it had that hook from the very beginning. The narrator was excellent, his voice definitely matched the feel of the book and made the characters come to life.
So now to the meat and potatoes. While the book didn’t have any foul language, it did have some pretty detailed sex scenes 🤣 now I’m no prude. But I’ve come to find that books filled with explicit sex scenes, usually lack real quality to the writing and genuine creativity. While there were some details I really enjoyed in the book, and I was interested from start to finish. It left me with a semi dirty/unsatisfied feeling. Similar to how you feel after stopping through the McDonald’s drive thru and eating in your car, hoping no one sees you. So yeah, this is one of those guilty pleasures, that you indulge in ever so often. But don’t expect it to leave you feeling like you just read the best book or your life.

Snooze fest
Revisado: 05-20-21
Only got about two hours in and just couldn’t listen anymore. Narrators voice was super irritating, sounded like they should be reading children’s books instead. Didn’t get that hook line and sinker feeling from the beginning so I knew it was gonna be a dud. I’ve listened to some slow burners before, and the detail in the story and quality of writing is what kept me hooked to those. This one just fell flat.

Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Wonderful story!
Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Great thriller, with the right amount of twists and turns. Always kept me guessing and wanting more! Love the detail in the writing. Narrator almost ruined it for me though. Absolutely terrible. Weird breathy whisper voice, that didn’t do the story justice. Other than that. One of the best books I’ve listened to!

Revisado: 02-26-21
This is the 3rd book by Howard that I have listened to, the first two were fantastic. This one definitely takes the cake! I love that Howard makes references to characters from her other books, it really makes the world she is developing that much more rich and believable. I really liked the two different character perspectives in The Nothing Man, one from Eve and the other from Jim. I was hooked from the beginning! Love the rawness of this book, the flow was nice and the plot developed at a comfortable pace. You definitely have to listen carefully so you don’t miss anything. I felt like I was watching a thriller! Howard paints such a good picture throughout, and the subtle details to things here and there really make the book come to life with so many different feelings and emotions. The narration as always is top notch, love love love. A fantastic read!!

What a waste
Revisado: 02-16-21
Total waste of time, every character is unlikeable and the story drug on and on with nothing really happening. The plot never evolved into anything more than what it started out as. I wouldn’t even call this a psychological thriller, or any type of thriller when there is no mystery or layers of depth to the story. The narrator has an incredibly annoying voice, and the book overall was a complete waste of time

Yawn
Revisado: 02-09-21
I’ve read almost all of Diane Chamberlain’s books, and I must say this one left much to be desired. This was more of a sob story than anything. Most of Chamberlains books have many layers, unexpected events, unpredictable layering to the plot, and a hook that keeps you invested. The good father was a yawn, I felt like nothing really exciting happened. No real twists or turns to the plot. I kept waiting for the story to ramp up, but it stayed at a slow boring pace. Narrators were good and probably the only thing that kept me listening.
