Historia
Anisa Ellahi dreams of being a translator of “great works of literature,” but instead mostly spends her days subtitling Bollywood movies, living off her parents’ generous allowance, and discussing the “underside of life” with her best friend, Naima. Anisa’s mediocre white boyfriend, Adam, only adds to her growing sense of inadequacy with his savant-level aptitude for languages, successfully leveraging his expansive knowledge into an enviable career. But when Adam learns to speak Urdu with native fluency practically overnight, Anisa forces him to reveal his secret.

Uuuurrrrggghhh skip this!!!!!
Revisado: 11-15-23
Goes from bad to worse and then just ends. The least likable main character ever, but she's presented as though we should sympathize with her "struggles". Just awful. The second half is even worse. As though the author wanted to squish every hot topic in, with no sensitivity and very little to do with the plot. The twist can be seen coming from far away, and the main character's reaction is just terrible writing. I don't often give reviews, especially not terrible ones, but this warrants it. AWFUL

This should be in sappy romance section, then readers like me would know to avoid it.

Historia
Sweetbitter meets The Nightingale in this pause-resisting novel about a woman who returns to her family’s ancestral vineyard in Burgundy and unexpectedly uncovers a lost diary, an unknown relative, and a secret her family has been keeping since World War II. To become one of only a few hundred certified wine experts in the world, Kate must pass the notoriously difficult Master of Wine examination. She’s failed twice before; her third attempt will be her last chance.

Only one complaint
Revisado: 07-01-20
Really enjoyed this book, and the narrator, with one serious exception.... the South African accent is TERRIBLE! The Afrikaans accent is tough, either get a South African to do it, or do a British accent and it'll pass for English speaking South African, that would be much better than suffering through a really terrible Afrikaans accent that was Australian/ German/ goodness alone knows....

A movingstory, sensitively narrated
Revisado: 01-29-19
A very moving story, at times tough to listen to, but very sensitively narrated by a narrator who has the most beautiful story teller's reading voice. She enunciates clearly and is a joy to listen to, even through the tough parts that had me tearing up. A hard topic very sensitively and beautifully dealt with, connecting fiction to real events in a very clever, unforced way, really bringing the characters to life, and bringing the devastation of the Nazi regime into sharp focus for the reader. I read an article in the Guardian with sadness that said "One in 20 British adults do not believe the Holocaust happened, and 8% say that the scale of the genocide has been exaggerated, according to a poll marking Holocaust Memorial Day.". This book is therefore a necessary reminder of our awful history, told in a very relatable story.
