Historia
World War II continues, and Ada and her brother, Jamie, are living with their loving legal guardian, Susan, in a borrowed cottage on the estate of the formidable Lady Thorton - along with Lady Thorton herself and her daughter. Life in the crowded cottage is tense enough, and then, quite suddenly, Ruth, a Jewish girl from Germany, moves in. A German? The occupants of the house are horrified. But other impacts of the war become far more frightening. As death creeps closer to their door, life and morality during wartime grow more complex.

Beautiful story with a wonderful performance!
Revisado: 03-22-24
I've listened to both books in this series & I believe I've found a new favorite author! My 12 yr old daughter has also enjoyed listening to both books, the first being assigned for a reading competition at school. The performance of the reading was marvelous! I honestly can't imagine reading this book without the distinct voices & accents of each character. I cried at more than one point in the story because these characters has become dear friends & my heart broke for the challenges they faced & soared for their triumphs!

Loved it!
Revisado: 01-08-21
This is the second book I've read by Laurel Mouritsen and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I appreciated that the story started well into the establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that its characters are centered in Missouri rather than most historical fiction that I've read that either tells everything from a Kirkland- centered focus, or splits the focus between both.
The characters are well-developed, distinct and relatable. Nancy Peterson's performance is pleasant to listen to and filled with impressively notable dialects for characters from various parts of the nation at that time.
I especially appreciated that I could listen from my phone when in the car, and then transition to my Echo dot whenever I was home, to save my phone's battery, and it never missed a beat in transition.

Historia
From best-selling author Toni Sorenson comes a captivating account of the beloved Old Testament story of Ruth and Naomi. Ruth and Naomi: Whithersoever Thou Goest is the inspiring tale of two women’s matchless devotion, envisioned as never before. It is a time of famine and despair in the land: crops are failing, idol-worship is widely practiced, and those who follow the God of Israel are cruelly oppressed.

LOVED it! So Beautiful!
Revisado: 06-08-20
The voices took me right into the culture and created images in my mind of each character. The story was so well- written that these people became my friends. I could easily imagine how these women could be the ancestors of the Lord Jesus Christ. They became real people to me, who faced real difficulties of life as they lived according to the laws and traditions of Jewish and Moabitish culture. They developed over the course of the story not only the friendship we know of from the Bible, but also the attributes of Christ (love, kindness, forgiveness, endurance, compassion, mercy, etc.) that clearly would be passed on through His moral genetics as well as His Divine inheritance. This book has made me want to increase my own devotion to my God, and reach out in love and hospitality to all I encounter. I want to be a better representative of my faith as these women were presented to be!

Just What I Needed!
Revisado: 12-29-19
Al Carraway, your enthusiasm for God and the gospel of Jesus Christ, including His restored church, was exactly what I needed in my life right now! I have felt the same thrill from the truths you celebrate. And I've had similar moments when I'm going through a trial so heavy I don't think I can bear it, only to find that as I turn to Christ and trust in Him, I am guided through it and come out better on the other end, as you testified. Thank you for reminding me of my own lifetime of conversion experiences! I hope to be better at sharing my testimony and inviting others to join us, as you are! I love your passion!
Hearing this story was awesome! I loved the honest and entertaining descriptions of Al's thoughts about the missionaries when she was first learning the gospel. She had me literally laughing outloud!

Intriguing & enjoyable!
Revisado: 12-07-19
I enjoyed the casual tone of this presentation, as if this was a neighbor or friend just relating their thoughts to me on his daughter's latest adventures and their experiences together with it. I was intrigued by what the motivation for the piece was - I kept listening to hear what was "going to happen." Which story would tell me the reason this man felt inspired to share these tales? In the end, I kinda liked that it's left up to me to pull from their experiences my own praises and meaning. It's refreshing in a way! At one point, well into the story, I felt a great connection - an Ah-Hah! moment - in which I could find symbolism for my own life and struggles. I may listen to this all over again to see what more I can learn from it!

This book contains stories told from the point of view of those who experienced the revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants, giving us insight into their meaning. While the section headings provide context for the revelations, they don't tell the complete story. What questions prompted the revelations? What did the Lord's responses mean to those He addressed? How did they respond? Perfect for study with the Doctrine and Covenants.

I Gained a Greater Perspective
Revisado: 11-16-19
Having paid close attention in seminary during the year we studied The Doctrine and Covenants, and having always been fascinated by the History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I thought this would simply be a review of what I already knew, but it was much more. It made me think more deeply about the wise of this holy book. My testimony was strengthened as I listened to the explanations of all that surrounded the events that led to each revelation, section, or declaration. I'm glad I listened to this!

Great Principles, Short & Simple Snippets
Revisado: 10-10-19
I appreciated the variety of presentation from teaching the principles, sharing his personal experiences, and having other voices share their snippets of experience within their family relationships. A great, easily digestible reminder of principles I'd forgotten to keep working on. I want to listen to it again, and I'm glad it's short enough that I can easily fit it into my life again.

EVERYONE should read/listen to this book!
Revisado: 02-10-19
Loved the format (The Lie, the Stories, What Helped her). Some of the lies I have struggled with myself, others I know people who have struggled with them, and some made me question if that was something I needed to take a deeper look at my life to see if it's a lie that I didn't realize live by that I need to change. I am grateful to have been walked through another's while with that lie and now have guidelines for how to overcome them, no matter how they manifest in mine or others' lives.
Loved that God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ are so integral in her life stories and successes. I often find myself amending the counsel given in other motivational/ self- help books to include the truths of the Gospel that are not as present in society's world. But in this book, I found the truths Rachel shared and her beliefs about God's character, intention, and involvement in our lives to match my own beliefs VERY well, (and I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).
Loved the rawness and vulnerability! My husband heard part and was questioning if she is as "real" as she was claiming, while really being a celebrity. I felt I knew Rachel, and her life story enough to defend her. I realize I only know her through the lens of this book, but I could be friends with the woman who is revealed through this book. She is real.

Revisado: 11-02-18
Al Silber is engaging, intelligent, passionate! I love the idea of filling out the story we love with so much of what we aren't given in Fiddler. The song we're brilliantly woven with the narrative of the book. I want to read the rest of the book now!
