Nothing Happened
Revisado: 01-31-25
I listened to this whole book, waiting for something to happen. Nothing did. Details are great if they have something to do with the story, but most of the details in this book were completely irrelevant. I liked Some Luck, but this book was a huge disappointment and a complete waste of time.

Historia
For as long as historical records have existed, authoritarian regimes have tried to rewrite history to suit their purposes, using their dictatorial powers to create myths, spread propaganda, justify decisions, erase opponents, and even dispose of crimes. Today, as America’s Republican Party becomes increasingly radicalized, it’s not surprising to see the GOP read from a similarly despotic script. Indeed, the party is taking dangerous, aggressive steps to rewrite history—and not just from generations past.

Everyone Should Read this Book
Revisado: 09-09-24
If you are wondering why so many people believe conspiracy theories and lies, even when the truth is right in front of them, this book explains it. Although it might seem like a new thing, this phenomenon has been around for a long time. It is more important than ever to educate people, especially young people, about how lies and misinformation are used by those who wish to destroy our democracy.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author Kristen Green draws on years of research to tell the extraordinary and little-known story of young Mary Lumpkin, an enslaved woman who blazed a path of liberation for thousands. She was forced to have the children of a brutal slave trader and live on the premises of his slave jail, known as the “Devil’s Half Acre”. When she inherited the jail after the death of her slaveholder, she transformed it into “God’s Half Acre”, a school where Black men could fulfill their dreams.

Narration Ruined it for me
Revisado: 09-04-24
The subject matter of this book is important and I really wanted to listen to it, but I had to stop after the first few chapters. The narrator speaks as though she were telling about happy events when everything in this book is sad and absolutely heart-wrenching. It was like someone laughing at a funeral.

Historia
In search of an explanation for the crisis that reached an unsettling crescendo in 2020 - a year of pandemic, civil unrest, and political turmoil - National Book Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Evan Osnos returned to three places he knew firsthand: Greenwich, Connecticut; Clarksburg, West Virginia; and Chicago, Illinois. Reported over the course of six years, Wildland follows ordinary individuals as they navigate the varied landscapes of 21st-century America. Through their powerful, often poignant stories, Osnos traces the sources of America’s political dissolution.

Great book, gifted writer and narrator, bravo!
Revisado: 11-06-23
I have read several good books about recent political events, but this one stands out. Evan Osnos captures what has happened in our country that brings us to where we are by telling stories. The stories of real people in diverse geographical and cultural areas of the US, with many direct quotes, are engaging and enlightening. Evan is a gifted writer and an awesome narrator, a rare combination!

Historia
Ever since a childhood visit to Washington, DC, Cassidy Hutchinson aspired to serve her country in government. Raised in a working-class family with a military background, she was the first in her immediate family to graduate from college. Despite having no ties to Washington, Hutchinson landed a vital position at the center of the Trump White House.

Amazing Individual, Incredible Story
Revisado: 10-29-23
I watched Cassidy testify before the January 6 Committee. I was impressed by her poise, her intelligence and most of all, her courage. I am flummoxed by the folks who think her book is "juvenile". In my opinion, nothing could be further from the truth. Cassidy demonstrates a maturity and wisdom far beyond her age. She tells her story without animus toward anyone, even though she has every reason to be angry. She does an excellent job of describing the inner workings of the White House and her role there.
I believe that Cassidy Hutchinson is, and will continue to be, a role model for those who face circumstances that test their ability and capacity to do what is right in spite of the consequences. If people who support former president Trump had even a small measure of her courage, he would have been held accountable years ago.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Heartbreaking and Enlightening
Revisado: 05-22-22
I looked at the reviews for this book before writing my own to see if anyone else had the same response. I stopped reading these reviews because 1) I don't agree with the criticisms regarding the characters, the plot, etc., and 2) " I hate this book" is not the way to review a book, in my opinion, and I have not seen this in any of the other book reviews on Audible.
I liked everything about this book, but what stood out for me was that it helped me to understand what it is like to be Black in America, close up...not from a distance.

Narration is not what I expected
Revisado: 04-30-19
The story of Debbie Reynolds's life is fascinating but it was hard for me to get past her narration. Since she was an actress, this was very surprising to me. She pauses in places where pauses are not called for and it was very distracting for me. It's hard to imagine someone else doing the narration, though. That would have been weird. I enjoyed the book but I'm not sure if I would have understood all the details if I had not read "My Girls" by Todd Fisher. Todd's book gives a a broader perspective of the events Debbie talks about and his narration is very good.
