Historia
Fusing the narrative power of an award-winning novelist and the detailed research of an experienced investigator, author Darcy O'Brien unfolds the story of Dr. John Dale Cavaness, the southern Illinois physician and surgeon charged with the murder of his son Sean in December 1984. Outraged by the arrest of the skilled medical practitioner who selflessly attended to their needs, the people of Little Egypt, as the natives call their region, rose to his defense. But during the subsequent trial, a radically different, disquieting portrait of Dr. Cavaness would emerge.

What an outstanding book! It’s written so well, is absolutely engrossing, and is performed spectacularly. I’m big fan of true crimes book and this is now among the best I’ve listened to.

Very helpful book - awful narration
Revisado: 08-15-21
I bought this audiobook and the Kindle version. The information is extremely helpful, and listening to the audio helps to interrupt my thinking spirals, but the narration is terrible. I can still appreciate the information, but, to me, the narrator sounds like my Alexa.

Historia
It's 1934. Businesses went under by the hundreds, debt and foreclosures boomed, and breadlines grew in many American cities. In the midst of this misery, some folks explored unscrupulous ways to make money. Angel-faced John Partlow and carnival huckster Ginger LaFrance are among the worst of this lot. Joining together they leave their small-time confidence scams behind to attempt an elaborate kidnapping-for-ransom scheme in New Orleans.

One month later, her naked body stabbed over 30 times and missing both feet and a forearm was discovered on an abandoned farm. Slow
Revisado: 02-17-18
This book is very thorough, very descriptive, and well researched. But it’s an extremely slow listen. This may be my own fault: I typically enjoy true crime novels that provide insight into the character, motives, and relationships between the key figures. With a serial killer, though, the motives remain locked in there killer himself/herself. For me, this read like a tragic catalogue of events followed by another plod through the justice system. Like other reviewers, I also feel that the narrator was the wrong choice for this book.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 10-16-16
I found the story intriguing, but I had a difficult time following the narrator. I love Irish accents and I always thought that I could listen to an Irish person read the phone book! Unfortunately, this book proved my theory wrong.
It was hard to distinguish between characters and the pace and flow of scenes (or even sentences) were sometimes strangely disjointed. I typically listen while commuting, so I rely on smooth and nuanced narration to help me keep in track of the plot.
I enjoyed what I was able to follow in the story, and I may try the book again in print form.

Historia
A politician’s son gets involved in a murder and drags Brady along with him. Running for governor on the Republican ticket, Tom Baron needs his image to be squeaky clean. He employs men like Brady Coyne, a compassionate Boston attorney, to keep problems far away from his campaign. But when his son doesn’t come home one night, Tom’s political strategy becomes a criminal matter. His son’s girlfriend has been murdered and the boy has no alibi. To protect his friend’s political ambitions, Brady digs into the investigation, finding a trail of drugs and corruption that stretches far across the Eastern seaboard. Tom Baron may be his friend, but Brady Coyne will stomach no cover-up. If the son is guilty and Tom is involved, Brady will come down on the would-be governor with a fury that will make Boston politics look like a student council election.

Decent but dated
Revisado: 01-03-16
This was my first Brady Coyne mystery and I decided to listen to the whole book (because I wasn't able to return it). I discovered that the novel was originally published in 1987; I didn't know this going in and wasn't prepared for the casual sexism or introduction to "new" issues (that really aren't new anymore).
Since I was committed to finishing this one, I was pleasantly surprised by how the second half of the book picked up and I really enjoyed the climax of the novel. I probably won't purchase another book in this series, but I can see how the series could grow on you.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-13-15
I saw the commercials for this book, and I think I was intrigued before the book was even released. Unfortunately, the book was not at all what I expected. Far from a dark, gritty cop mystery, this book struck me more as cheesy romantic fiction intertwined with an unbelievable plot and unrealistic characters. I think I'll limit my future Patterson purchases to the NYPD Red series.
