Historia
Episode Thirteen takes them to every ghost hunter's holy grail: the Paranormal Research Foundation. This brooding, derelict mansion holds secrets and clues about bizarre experiments that took place there in the 1970s. It's also famously haunted, and the team hopes their scientific techniques and high tech gear will prove it. But as the house begins to reveal itself to them, proof of an afterlife might not be everything Matt dreamed of.

Great Read
Revisado: 08-23-24
This is only sort of a haunted house. It certainly starts out as a haunted house story although from a unique perspective. It’s kind of the written version of a found footage flick. As the story progresses though it takes on a more Cthulhuian direction. I won’t spoil the end, but it goes hard towards mystery. Definitely worth my time and very enjoyable. Usually, I don’t like having multiple narrators, but in this case it worked.

Historia
Humanity pushed its way to the stars—and encountered the Gbaba, a ruthless alien race that nearly wiped us out. Earth and her colonies are now smoldering ruins, and the few survivors have fled to distant, Earth-like Safehold, to try to rebuild. But the Gbaba can detect the emissions of an industrial civilization, so the human rulers of Safehold have taken extraordinary measures: with mind control and hidden high technology, they've built a religion in which every Safeholdian believes, a religion designed to keep Safehold society medieval forever.

This is great read. The rest of the series never really matches the excitement of this one. Weber is a master at writing ship to ship battles.

Wonderful addition to the lit RPG genre. It has a great blend of analogues for gaming without feeling like a game. Largely, it feels like a fantasy novel, with just enough gaming. Feel to give it an extra pop. Overall I very much enjoyed it.

Historia
Those on the side of progressing humanity through advanced technology have finally triumphed over their oppressors. The unholy war between the small but mighty island realm of Charis and the radical, luddite Church of God's Awaiting has come to an end. However, even though a provisional veil of peace has fallen over human colonies, the quiet will not last. For Safehold is a broken world, and as international alliances shift and Charis charges on with its precarious mission of global industrialization, the shifting plates of the new world order are bound to clash.

A snoozer
Revisado: 02-08-19
This one was a real snoozer. Lots of people have been giving Jonathan Davis a hard time for some poor pronunciation choices and inconsistencies with the previous books. I thought Mr. Davis did a good job, yes some of the pronunciations were inconsistent or wrong, but it was still enjoyable to listen to. The real problem was the lack of anything approaching excitement. In this massive novel there was one painfully short burst of excitement. I find the story idea of this series to be tremendous but I’m often disappointed with the execution. If you like meetings upon meetings that generate mountains of dialogue then you will love this. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll continue the series. I’m too far into quit now. I am truly interested in what will happen next. I just wish it happened with a little more excitement and a little less talking.

This is become one of my favorite sci-fi novels bar none. It’s a shame the author passed away before he could continue and grow in this rich universe. I’ve listen to it multiple times and sure that I will many more. If you are a fan of military sci-fi in space opera the series mashes them together perfectly. While the main characters self-hatred gets a little bit much to take at times, overall it is simply delightful.

Historia
"Houston, we've had a problem here." On the evening of April 13, 1970, the three astronauts aboard Apollo 13 were just hours from the third lunar landing in history. But as they soared through space, two hundred thousand miles from earth, an explosion badly damaged their spacecraft. With compromised engines and failing life-support systems, the crew was in incomparably grave danger.

Great Story, but not as exciting as expected
Revisado: 09-09-15
Well, this is a great little read. I learned a fair amount about the Apollo 13 flight. The story is great! Great drama that is all the more gripping due to the fact it really happened! The narrator does a solid job. However, I was looking for more of a novelization than this turned out to be. It didn't read like a textbook to be sure, but it still lacked something. I never forgot I was reading a non-fiction book. The style was still in the non-fiction vein. I was hoping for a true story that read like a novel and this didn't meet the expectation. However, it was god and I'd recommend it.

Historia
For centuries, the world of Safehold, last redoubt of the human race, lay under the unchallenged rule of the Church of God Awaiting. The Church permitted nothing new - no new inventions, no new understandings of the world. What no one knew was that the Church was an elaborate fraud - a high-tech system established by a rebel faction of Safehold’s founders, meant to keep humanity hidden from the powerful alien race that had destroyed old Earth.

A long suffering reader ploughs on
Revisado: 03-08-14
This was are very tough review for me. My first impulse was to give it only two stars, but I ultimately awarded a third. The easiest way to explain my opinion is to supply simple pros and cons list, so here goes.
Pros:
1. Weber spends a lot of time discussing the details of war that are often overlooked (This is also a con and I'll explain why in the cons list). The importance of manufacturing, uniform measures, supply routes, intelligence, and a myriad of other details are both interesting and rarely come up in the genre.
2. The history of technological development and it's impact on the world is also very interesting and rarely covered in the science fiction world.
3. The underlying plot is very engaging. I really want to see what happens when and if the grand inquisitor finds out the truth. I am curiouser and curiouser about the alien species that nearly destroyed humanity.
Cons
1. The things interesting in #1-2 above become drudgery after getting the details hour after hour. At times I felt more like I was reading a dry history textbook than a novel. The great characters and plot are crowded out by ceaseless discussion of how long it takes to manufacture a gun and why cavalry rant as good in war as you might imagine. Even well researched info gets boring after a while.
2. Most of the endless discussion from the first con, is delivered in prose. Sometimes whole chapters slip by with almost no dialogue at all!
3. The main plot is moving along about the same rate as Jabba the Hut in a foot race. In the last several novels very little has actually happened. A subtitle for several of the books might be "The War continues".
Honestly, I still think it deserves a 2 star rating, but I am interested enough in the plot I'll probably read the next one. I have a hard time giving two star to a novel if I plan to read the next book in the series. There are glimmers of greatness that keep me ganging in there. I am hoping it will suddenly improve and I'll be glad I hung in there. Books 8-10 of Wheel of Time made we want to give up too, but I'm glad I kept reading. I'll hang in there and award 3 stars.

Very strong entry
Revisado: 02-20-14
O.K., after reading many other reviews, I feel the need to defend this novel a bit. There are certainly similarities, between this novel and the previous two, but it's not fair to call them identical. I think that this series is the story of Recluse more than it is the story of any particular person. On that regard we get treated to some great developments in this novel. We finally see how the steam engines we saw in the first novel became a part of Recluse and learn where the book on order comes from. I am excited to read the next novel where I hope to read of the destruction of Fair Haven and learn more about Justin. This was a great entry in this excellent series.

On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

Great story, but not a great mechanic (for me)
Revisado: 09-11-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes. The story is quite good. It is an interesting plot with good world building.
What did you like best about this story?
The idea of the time tombs was an interesting twist on the time travel motif. Also, loved the tale of Rachel and the backwards travel.
Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Probably. A couple of the voices spend familiar.
Could you see Hyperion being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
That would be tough.
Any additional comments?
Unlike other, I didn't like the Canterbury Tales style of storytelling. I find the start of stories to be the hardest to read and this book gave me six beginnings.
