Fair handed and fun bio of a unique man
Revisado: 09-05-21
Engaging. Culturally loaded, and with enough touchstones that it is quite relatable. I’m thankful that Mike Nichols lived a nice long life into his 80’s. He leaves behind him a huge wave of art—some average some bad but much that is undeniably brilliant. This book was fair handed and not overly laudatory. A very good read.

My Second Time Through It
Revisado: 03-19-21
Arthur Morey’s voice, more than even the sinewy plot lines of this book made me want to listen to it a second time. I remember liking it a lot, but I would never have remembered all of it. Now I can’t forget it. It’s such a good book, of rich complexity; just the right length— all you naysayers are wrong. What a gem. Arthur Morey, you sure can rock a forty hour book.

My second time
Revisado: 12-31-20
I remember liking this book, but not the details of why. I gave it another listen and it has captivated my attention the entire time through. I needed to take my mind off of 2020 and the world around me. What great writing. Good characters. Dark subjects and bad people. Excellent. Also a phenomenal performance by the reader, Stephen Lang. Just a great listen.

Historia
Jim Thompson's classic The Grifters is one of the best novels ever written about the art of the con, an ingeniously crafted story of deception and betrayal that was the basis for the critically acclaimed film by Stephen Frears and Martin Scorcese. To his friends, to his coworkers, and even to his mistress Moira, Roy Dillon is an honest hardworking salesman. He lives in a cheap hotel just within his pay bracket. He goes to work every day. He has hundreds of friends and associates who could attest to his good character.

Barbara Rosenblat Rocks this Book!
Revisado: 08-10-19
Pair a great story with Barbara Rosenblat-- hell, PAIR THE PHONEBOOK WITH BARBARA ROSENBLAT--and you've got lightning in a bottle. You forget that there is only one person reading--she is a vocal chameleon. This is such a great book which I've read a few times. It really came alive with her reading it. Can't wait to re-see the movie. Just Brilliant!!

Historia
In 1975, five young employees of a sclerotic William Morris agency left to start their own strikingly innovative talent agency. In the years to come, Creative Artists Agency would vault from its origins in a tiny office on the last block of Beverly Hills to become the largest and most imperial, groundbreaking, and star-studded agency Hollywood has ever seen - a company whose tentacles now spread throughout the world of movies, music, television, technology, advertising, sports, and investment banking far more than previously imagined.

Good book, flawed by technical and narrative issue
Revisado: 11-07-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The topic of film agency was fascinating, well-researched and thorough. The book is very well written as well.
What other book might you compare Powerhouse to and why?
The Agency by Frank Rose. Similar topic and scope.
Did the narrators do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
There are three readers. Two males and one woman. The female and one male are professional, enjoyable and clear. The other male is the author, who has a voice like a cartoon dog. He is given the least to read--transitional topics and chapter introductions, but it doesn't help that his phrasing is jarring and odd. He doesn't understand commas, which is odd since he wrote the book, and often pauses at odd places within his sentences. Perhaps the producer was afraid to correct him because he is the author. He is gravelly and annoying, and I cringe when he opens his mouth. Otherwise, cool book!
Any additional comments?
The audio production could be improved. All hard consonants, B's, CH's, TH's etc. are lopped off the front of words. Give it a listen, and calm the filters down, boys. Very obvious in many books I've recently listened to.

Within minutes, Mackenzie was in handcuffs, arrested for possession of cocaine and heroin. But the star who turned up High on Arrival has finally come back down to earth - to stay.

Chilling and True
Revisado: 10-01-09
Forget the controversy surrounding the tale's authenticity--it's irrelevant. This is a very powerful story containing great lessons about tragedy and redemption. Phillips has survived so many trials that would have incapacitated so many other people, and beat the odds to tell her story. I'm glad she found the words and the strength to give it voice.

Amazing book ruined by absurd pronunciations
Revisado: 05-01-09
I have to agree with earlier posts. I love Hollywood, and I could love this book so much more ( a solid 5 stars!) but it's marred by the reader. Great to see others were also annoyed by the massacre of names and concepts by this ill-guided, ill-produced narrator. Even "foreign" names like Richard Burton are clammed. It takes something away from the experience, as another listener mentioned, to wince at howlers like biopic, (it doesn't rhyme with myopic!!). This guy shouldn't read without adequate supervision. It's so bad that Tantor should consider re-recording this book properly.
