Historia
Generations of Montrose women—Augusta, Victoria, Willow—have lived together in their quaint two-story bungalow in California for years. They keep to themselves, never venture far from home, and their collection of tinctures and spells is an unspoken bond between them. But when seventeen-year-old Nickie Montrose brings home a boy for the first time, their quiet lives are thrown into disarray. For the other women have been withholding a secret from Nickie that will end her relationship before it’s even begun: the decades-old family curse that any person they fall in love with dies.

Interesting tale of family, love, culture, and hope
Revisado: 04-29-25
I thought this was an interesting story. The premise was unlike anything I’ve heard or read before and it was well written and narrated. I thought it was rather long and could’ve been shorter and still conveys the same message but overall a nice story

Historia
After three disastrous marriages, a series of bad dates, and a tumultuous relationship with an emotionally abusive mother, psychology professor Nancy Jewel is through with love and commitment. Romantic or familial, the notion is a waste of her time. Content with being alone, she’s starting to feel normal-ish when she learns her father, incarcerated in Georgia, has been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Very good narration but bland storyline
Revisado: 01-30-25
The narrator was good but the storyline was rather bland and repetitive. It wrapped up nicely but I wouldn’t be interested in reading more from this storyline. I didn’t care for the heroine’s mother’s character since she was rather toxic but I was glad that the main character found her worth by the story’s end.

Historia
They say the love of money is the root of all evil, but for Ken Swift, it's the love of a woman. Ken is 21, hurting people for cash to try to pay his way through college, when he lays eyes on Jimi Lee, the woman who will change the course of his entire life. What's meant to be a one-night stand with the Harvard-bound beauty turns into an explosion of sexual chemistry that neither can quit. And when Jimi Lee becomes pregnant, their two very different worlds collide in ways they never could have anticipated.

A decent read but somehow lacks classic EJD luster
Revisado: 11-22-24
I am a longtime and avid fan of EJD. I liked this prequel enough because it rss well written and well performed (Dion Graham really knows how to bring characters to life) but the storyline was a bit weak. A lot less action than the first book Bad Men and Wicked Women. Lots of sex which made it read more like erotica and silly repetitive relationship drama that was more akin to baby mama/baby daddy toxicity rather than a husband and wife marriage.
The one thing I did appreciate though was the light shed on the cultural disparities between people of East African countries and African Americans and the many stereotypes that permeate both groups. I also couldn’t stand Jimi Lee! Her character graitiated my nerves and I and couldn’t wait for the story to end whenever she spoke. She was so selfish, childish, narrow minded, ignorant, and arrogant in her limited world view. It’s a wonder Ken didn’t have her ass come up missing..he definitely could have done better. But anyway, after reading this book it clarified many things from the first novel especially where Margeaux’s character issues were concerned. I would only recommend reading this book if you read it first and then read Bad Men and Wicked Women right after. Otherwise it can be skipped.

The writing and the themes of the story
Revisado: 10-19-24
I loved part two of this story. The author did a great job tying up the characters stories and also left some good endings to pick back up for a third installment if she wanted to. I would definitely read/listen to it. The only thing I didn’t like was the multi narration. Mela Lee’s narration of Brittany’s story was excellent and I wish she would have read the entire book rather than the other two narrators. I especially didn’t care for Kemi’s narrator who mispronounced ‘Tobias’ every time. Other than that, it was an awesome story and a different take on black women’s struggles in another egalitarian society, one which you wouldn’t think imposes such disparity among its citizens.

Very good story of perseverance and survival
Revisado: 04-17-24
This was a very good story and though heartbreaking at times, the ending was good and hopeful. The narration was good but could have been better had a male narrator been used for the male POV chapters.

Really good read for the topic of racism in the south in modern times
Revisado: 04-06-24
I enjoyed this novel. It’s a good story that reminds us to never forget the horrors of slavery and racism in the South. Even though stories set in Mississippi and Alabama are hard read at times, this story was well written and well performed and quite thought provoking. It examines race relations in 1980s Mississippi (which not surprisingly wasn’t very progressive from Reconstruction and Jim Crow days) between a young g black girl and a grown white woman. Being told from the POV of a child helps the story maintain the innocence that is often lost in adults due to life’s hardships and tough lessons. I would definitely read other works by this author and would recommend to anyone interested in studying racism and race relations in society and literature.

Historia
Tragedy flips Amore Brown’s world on its axis right before she heads off to college. Having to sit tight for the summer, she chooses Jersey City, New Jersey - the home of her estranged father - to pass the time. Here, in urban grit, a stark contrast to the comforts of suburbia, she reconnects with a long-lost cousin for some final months of summer excursions, enrooting, and evolving. But it could never be that simple, even if it were all so simple then.

Takerra Allen Doesn’t Miss!
Revisado: 02-02-24
This story was so good! It started out a little slow but once it picked up, I couldn’t stop listening. Ms. Allen’s pen game is so fire! The story was heartbreaking in parts but the ending was so satisfying. The characters will stay with me a long time. I have read other titles by the author and was similarly fulfilled.
And the narration! Shayna Small is becoming a fast favorite of mine on Audible. She is quite talented and performs the story so well I felt like I was watching a movie.
This was an awesome listen and highly recommended if you want to hear a dope story that’s reminiscent of the best era in time- the 90s 🙂

Rain soaks Tessa Scott as she runs from her car to the old vine-covered property she has been called to survey. She’s too busy to accept a new job, but doing this favor for the grandmother of her childhood sweetheart delays a painful decision she must make about her controlling boyfriend. When Tessa finds a tattered journal carefully hidden inside the house’s ancient fireplace, the tragic story of how Ona was ripped from her mother’s arms to live and work in the palatial Mount Vernon, and the heart-shattering betrayal that led her to risk her life and run, has Tessa spellbound.

The story of Ona Judge is one that everyone should know
Revisado: 05-19-23
I was drawn to this book because it was about Ona Judge and while I loved the author’s creativity with fictionalizing her journal entries, I didn’t care much for the dual story line with Tessa. I found her story boring and while I could appreciate the use of her character to shed light on a black woman’s personal struggles with reproductive health issues and navigating an abusive relationship, I found her story distracting and felt like it took away from Ona’s story. Definitely worth a read in any case.
