Historia
Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed.

Maggie Patel has landed her dream job at The New York Spectator; or, it would be, if she could get a decent story assignment. When a career-making interview finally lands on her desk, it’s with the last person she’d ever want to see again — Edward, the Crown Prince of Bairmorne...and her long-ago friend.

Great actors, garbage script, trite plot
Revisado: 03-26-23
DNF Listened to this because of the great cast, but the plot was tried and unimaginative, and the scripting was garbage. plus there were weird intervals of music at scene breaks that had nothing to do with the story and were sometimes way too long

Historia
How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

unsatisfied
Revisado: 02-25-21
the premise of this book was promising and I think many of the ideas had merit... but the execution of it has left me profoundly unsatisfied. The examples explored and the many chapters around assumptions made and societal programming all seem great in theory but all it seems to be is theorizing. There's entire aspects of those stories that I felt were deeply underserved or unrepresented. There are many emotionally-charged topics discussed, and even in Gladwell's discussion of the assumptions and the way we our minds are trained to think about scenarios and interactions, I sometimes felt my own experiences entirely overlooked, my perspective was not reflected in those narratives at all and so I wonder - how can these assessments of these kinds of situations really be grasping the whole story they should? It became challenging to keep reading with the same unsettled grayness of scenario after scenario seemingly lacking in any actionable takeaway.
And even once he reaches his conclusions and lessons learned and we can start to see how the many varied stories all fit together is his proposed heart of the issue, I found those profoundly unsatisfying as well because I am faced once again with more theories and generalizations and little practical information. What this calls for is more real evidence and more proactive guidance on how we can be the change we want to see.
Maybe it succeeded in making me think, but the thinking is supposed to be productive, and I am not convinced this was for me.

struggled to finish all 90 minutes
Revisado: 03-06-20
I only got this because it was offered for free. I figured I like a few of his songs, so I'd see what all the fuss was about for this title. Turns out it just wasn't for me, and I was bored nearly from the getgo. It could be an incredible biography by someone else, but this format and his delivery fell flat. At least I learned a bit of backstory to some well known lyrics.

A prominent financier vanishes before bedtime, without his clothes. Hours later, a corpse is found in a bathtub wearing only pince-nez eyeglasses. When it’s determined that the body is not that of the financier, it’s up to amateur detective Lord Peter Wimsey to uncover the naked truth. As the part-time sleuth investigates what these men - one dead, one missing, both starkers - have in common, the pieces of two puzzles converge, and the case becomes more dangerous by the clue.

Audio muddled the story
Revisado: 02-03-20
As far as the mystery, I enjoyed this book, but the narration was a hinderance. The cadences of conversations and the too-staccato articulation of Peter's dialect was a trial to listen to. Oh, as was the reading of the inquest.

Historia
Raymond Chandler began his writing career at age 45. His muscular, fast-paced style set the standard for American hard-boiled mysteries. He distilled the essence of life in Southern California in the 1940s and 1950s. In The Long Goodbye, private eye Philip Marlowe befriends a down-on-his-luck war veteran with the scars to prove it. Then he finds out that Terry Lennox has a very wealthy nymphomaniac wife, whom he's divorced and remarried. She ends up dead. Soon Lennox is on the lam, and the cops and a crazy gangster are after Marlowe.

difficult to follow dialogue
Revisado: 11-11-19
I normally enjoy this genre, and I like Mr Gould's voice, but his narrative style was so monotone and unpaused that it was impossible to follow conversations. every character's words ran right into the next, no vocal or pitch changes to aide in identifying the speaker switch. as a result I completely lost the thread of the plot several times :(

Historia
This course is an introduction to the stock market and stock investing for novices and experienced investors alike. Professor DeGennaro uses simple analogies to explain the origin of stocks and other securities, as well as their relative risks. He stresses the danger of trying to beat the market by trying to pick winners, predict price trends, or otherwise find opportunities that other investors have missed.

Hardly worth my time
Revisado: 12-01-15
I had thought this might be interesting, and that I'd brush up on my Wall Street knowledge ... Not so much. Disappointed on both counts.
This course was for novices, 90% was well beneath the level of what I already know, especially after the last few economics, personal finance, and banking lecture series I've listened to in the last year or so.
There were a few useful tidbits such as investment strategy advice, but not a lot outside of common sense given a basic understanding of the given investment. I almost felt like the prof was talking down to me, being a little patronizing with his "see, isn't this easy?" way of presenting.
All in all, not bad, but not for me. So redundant of content in other classes in this course series, and definitely nothing to grab my attention.

Who knew a pirate attack could come in handy?
Revisado: 08-06-15
Absolutely incredible. One of the best books I have read in a long time. It was like Leverage meets White Collar with some essence of James Bond. Magnificent team of Agent O'Hare and Fox, they pulled off some incredible displays under incredibly high stakes. Who knew being attacked by pirates could come in handy?
The whole ride was a thrill, both because of the con process and the more action packed guns and grenades moments. And it wasn't all fun with felonies and firearms, I thought it was very intelligent too. Masterfully plotted (both Fox's schemes and by the authors overall).
The narration was great. Brick's female voices wavered into his male's tones occasionally, but the tones of the speakers remained identifiable. I was amused that his voice for older men, especially Jake, sounded just like James Garner. Incidentally I could picture him at 60ish playing Jake in a movie adaptation perfectly.
I can't wait to read the rest of the available books in this series!
