Different twist on a Cyberpunk world
Revisado: 02-11-23
Fun, action-packed, sprinkled with a literary reference here and there in the right places.
The world building is great. The attention given to the values of the society make it seem a bit Brave New World, a bit 1984, and a lot of Blade Runner. It is fun to hear the author’s speculation of the future. Gives some things to think about, after the Cyborg heroine is done kicking butt.
The fun part is, instead of a ragtag team of hackers trying to take down the Man, the hero is part of the Man. Who finds out she is the bad guy, but is really, really good at it.
The narrators were great as well. No complaints there at all. Kind of liked the slow careful cadence of the main character. A bit menacing, a bit tough guy (girl). Seemed like a good fit.

Didn’t expect to like this so much
Revisado: 01-24-23
Enjoy the Author’s LitRPG works, and like his writing, so figured I’d see what his non-sci-fi writing was like.
This book was a blast! Fun adventure with an amateur detective. Going to continue the series. Really enjoyed it. Not really my usual thing, but maybe it’s a new other thing.

Historia
Kai barely survived his encounter with the rogue AI calling itself “The God in the Machine” in the dark net. Promoted to level two with no time to recover, he has gained access to all Helltek has to offer. Life on the campus could be perfect except that Cyber Squad is one of the most high-risk jobs in the world. If the murderous AI wasn’t bad enough, the hackers who attacked TSOTA are up to no good, and a traitor within the Cyber Squad is helping them.

Can’t wait for Level 3!
Revisado: 02-23-22
I have read a bunch of RPGLit/Sci-fi/Cyberpunk books where the hero is in cyberspace. It is a great idea, usually action-packed, cool sidekicks, often a bit pulpy. Most of the time, after the last giant baddie is done away with, you can move on. Your investment in the world is finished.
I fully expected a series called “Cyber Squad” to be just that. Fun, but maybe that’s all. I was surprised at how much fun these were. The plot moves smoothly and there are some tropes employed, but there are also questions about everyone’s intentions and the nature of the company. The action scenes are suspenseful and satisfying, but it feels like there are some shifty cyberpunk themes boiling up beneath the action and cool characters. The narrator was great as well. Can’t wait for Level 3.

Wonderful world buildings, different kind of hero
Revisado: 02-23-22
Usually, when the hero is a bad guy and wants redemption, it is hard to make that character likable without glossing over the bad they have done.
The main character here is a really talented evil jerk trying to do right. I like that the evil he did was laid bare. It wasn’t “the old me was bad, but you can like me now, I’m good”, it was “I was wrong and I’m the same jerk and it’s a struggle”. It was interesting to follow his struggle. Was he likable? No, not really. He was condescending and uncaring and self-pitying, which made him hard to cheer for, but it fit the crotchety bitter old jerk he was. He would have been more likable if he seemed to really enjoy his new powers or had a real awakening we could relate to. It was a bit clinical.
In short, it’s a great story of an adventure in a very clever world with a talented capable MC, who is a bad guy trying to get better, but is still a jerk. Not a bad thing, just a different kind of hero.

Historia
More than a year after she helped save the world from the Sparnaxian invasion, Andrea Vernon is in a good place. Her boss is giving her greater responsibility and she’s getting to travel a lot (although her fill-in is hopeless at making coffee); things could be getting even more serious with her 8’ 4” superhero boyfriend, The Big Axe; and she has a really fun new BFF, Never More. Small issue, though, with that last item - Never More is a supervillain bent on world domination, and it looks as if nothing can stop her.

Fun and hilarious
Revisado: 08-19-19
The first book and this sequel are some of the funniest books I’ve listened to. The heroes are clever, creative, fun and hilarious. The lead character is relatable, although flawed and the story is paced well.
Will definitely look for the next in the series.
