Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Great perspective
Revisado: 03-24-23
What a great story to bring to life what women in the 60’s endured in their strive for some freedom and rights! It was laugh out loud funny in the truth of it.
I didn’t have any idea what to expect when I bought this book but was immediately taken in by Elizabeth’s hurdles in trying to be recognized.
Young women may find it hard to relate to such a time when women had careers but take note because this is history and how it really was!

Historia
Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music.

Predictable
Revisado: 04-15-22
I saw this author on tv talking about this book and was anxious to read it. Very disappointed in it however. While the premise of the story was interesting the characters were shallow and very predictable. While trying to tell the moral of “don’t stereotype people” the characters were stereotypes in the extreme.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 06-05-14
What did you love best about The First Phone Call from Heaven?
The unexpected ending of the book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The First Phone Call from Heaven?
When you count up the number of known phone calls they were accounted for.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened to it in one sitting.
Any additional comments?
I have read all of his books and this one did not disappoint. It seemed predictable at the start, but then it took that inevitable turn that always leaves you thinking when you finish the book!

Historia
In pre-war Prague, the dreams of two young lovers are shattered when they are separated by the Nazi invasion. Then, decades later, thousands of miles away in New York, there's an inescapable glance of recognition between two strangers. Providence is giving Lenka and Josef one more chance. From the glamorous ease of life in Prague before the Occupation, to the horrors of Nazi Europe, The Lost Wife explores the power of first love, the resilience of the human spirit, and the strength of memory.

Great Listen
Revisado: 06-05-14
What did you like best about this story?
while the story told of the personal tragedy of the period, the characters' own lives and story held my interest.
What about George Guidall and Suzanne Toren ’s performance did you like?
Their voices seemed to "age" as time went by in the book.
If you could take any character from The Lost Wife out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Lenka because she had experienced so much in her life, she would have a very unique perspective on life as a whole (I would think).
Any additional comments?
Great book about a very disturbing time in our history.
