Historia
Meet Charlie; unfulfilled and perimenopausal, Charlie’s suburban life is a far cry from the Manhattan glamour she once dreamed of. Her husband is incapable of talking about anything other than his latest Ironman challenge, her sex life consists of fictional encounters with Hollywood stars, her kids need constant man-management, and to make things worse, her optician has just prescribed her reading glasses. Oh, and she can’t stop crying at TV adverts… In the hope of re-discovering her sense of self, Charlie begins writing a list: 45 things to do before she’s 45.

A book about an alcoholic
Revisado: 04-27-25
I listen to this book because I thought it was nonfiction, and when it started as a novel, I was immediately disappointed. This isn’t the authors fault obviously. And the author wrote a very good book. It’s just that this type of story, about a woman, so flawed and morally confused, it’s not a story that is good for society. All this story does is make other women feel better about their own miserable lives. Rather than read stories about strong heroic women, there are stories like this, which make women feel better, but don’t actually make women better.

Historia
In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning.

I really loved the story!
Revisado: 10-29-24
Like my titlesuggests, I really loved the story! I thought it was well written and told a lot about hiking the Appalachian Trail. It did exactly what I expected it to do. The only criticism is that the narrator voice is so monotonous that sometimes I would space out and not be able to listen. But overall, I really enjoyed this and listened to the entire book.

Historia
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Narrator voice doesn’t match writer
Revisado: 06-12-24
This is a well written memoir but just wasn’t for me. It bothered me that the narrator sounded like a woman in her sixties and Cheryl was a 26 year old girl. I don’t relate to her promiscuity anyway, but if it would’ve been narrated from someone who was in her 20s, then I could have remembered that she was just a young woman and it didn’t matter that it didn’t relate to me. Also, I was hoping that this book was more about the Pacific Crest Trail, and I was very frustrated every time she got off the trail. She was less interested in the Pacific Crest Trail than she was in herself. So it’s a memoir about Cheryl Strayed, not really a book about the PCT. But I can see a young 20 something being really interested in this story and finding inspiration in it and I did listen to the whole book.

Helpful
Revisado: 03-14-24
I like how this book really defines what a narcissist is. Just because someone has narcissistic tendencies does not mean they’re a full-blown narcissist, and that was helpful because I found out I’m not really in a relationship with a narcissist. However, I still need boundaries to deal with their narcissistic tendencies, so I found this book helpful for that.

Historia
Why are we devastated by a word of criticism even when it’s mixed with lavish praise? Because our brains are wired to focus on the bad. This negativity effect explains things great and small: why countries blunder into disastrous wars, why couples divorce, why people flub job interviews, how schools fail students, why football coaches stupidly punt on fourth down. All day long, the power of bad governs people’s moods, drives marketing campaigns, and dominates news and politics.

Starts off well but then…
Revisado: 12-24-23
This book starts as a literature review of the many studies pertaining to the power of negative messages over positive messages. But then, it goes into a political rant at the end, so I abandoned it at that point. I don’t understand why researchers don’t present their research and then allow their readers to apply it to their own lives rather than drawing conclusions for them that fit a particular political agenda. I’m not an idiot; I can draw my own conclusions, thank you very much.

Question Everything
Revisado: 02-01-23
I really appreciated this book. However, I think it’s important not to put too much faith in anything, including “science.” I am an atheist, but I am also very skeptical of science. We have had science “prove” that sugar was okay and that fat made us fat, for example. When the author brought up how religious people gathered during covid and “ignored science,” I was put off but perhaps he has more knowledge now on the subject as well. As a conservative atheist, I felt a little defensive but it doesn’t discredit the information in this book. I really enjoyed listening to it and am looking forward to listening to Sam Harris next.

Revisado: 12-13-22
I like Tommy a lot better than Scott. Scott comes across as quite a know it all and if I hear the word juxtaposition one more time I’m going to stop listening. But overall, I like how they review scientific articles that they find and share their experiences and insight. And I think it’s cute how Tommy laughs Scott.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 06-30-21
I have mixed feelings about this book. I really liked Liz’s research of marriage. As a divorced person in a long term relationship who is contemplating marriage, I really connected with Liz’s fears. This book gave me the opportunity to think about remarrying, if, when, and how. However, knowing the demise of Liz and Filipe kind of sours my feelings about her experiences which is why I have mixed feelings about this book. I’m assuming I’m not alone.
