I was very sad to hear that William Dufris had passed away. The dedication to him read by the new narrator was very touching. I was overall pleased with the narration and was prepared for there to be changes. I just wish the new narrator had done his homework. He changed the pronunciation of Earl Lanier’s name. He gave Shinya an R for L accent which Shinya never had.

This could have been avoided with a little listening to how Dufris portrayed these characters.

Couldn't finish it

It doesn't happen often but I simply could not finish this title. I like the LitRPG genre and this book is not without potential but I found the main character so utterly unlikable that I couldn't continue with the story after over three hours of really, really trying.

I'm going to put it away for a while and see what happens. Maybe I'll try it again later.

I wanted to like this book. I read good things about it and the topic is in my wheelhouse. I could handle that they were short stories. I like short stories. I could handle that they addressed the first part of an end of the world story only. I just didn't enjoy the stories. I found my mind frequently drifting and when I pulled into the driveway I realized that the story didn't hold my interest and I wasn't listening to it.

If you like these stories I am happy for you. I didn't.

It was just OK

Some characters were certainly more interesting than others. The narration was not good. The most grating was the pronunciation of Roberto Jimenez. Anyone who would have that last name pronounced "JIM-in-ez" would likely go by Robert, not Roberto.

Great addition to the genre.

The idea that fictional character are living independently in their own universe is not new. That said, blending that genre with Dungeons & Dragons is a lot of fun.

If there is a sequel or a reboot of this story or a parallel story I will be first in line to buy it.

It was good enough that I'd like Ringo to write one more to finish it up the story. I hate when authors write a cliffhanger then abandon the series.

I first read this book as a child. This was a nostalgia purchase. For a book that was written before Pluto joined the list of planets (and well before it was kicked off the list) it is a fun view into the nearly prehistoric days of science fiction. Never mind the science errors, never mind the paper thin plot, never mind the cardboard cutout characters, and never mind that I never caught the main character's name.

There are a couple of irritations. The perhaps nameless captain cried or exclaimed most of his dialog. There are scores of crew members, or scores of thousands of ships, or scores of hundreds of light years. Most of the time Hamilton expressed a number he gave it to you as a multiplication problem. After taking the time to explain three times why a problem couldn't be solved a particular way that was exactly the way it was resolved.

I did not like this book as much as I did as a child. I also don't regret the credit spent on it. It's a piece of science fiction history and I can respect it for that.

If you are considering delving into science fiction history here definitely listen to the sample clip. Lewis is not high on my list of narrators.

SS Apologist

I'll grant that the SS were snappy dressers. It was tiresome listening to the ongoing, "The SS were actually pretty good guys and were actually pretty fond of jews." The afterword can be skipped altogether. It is not that I agree or disagree with Kratman but his essay does not fit with a work of light fiction.

Marc Vietor did not fail to impress. He is my second favorite narrator after William Dufris.

I'm an unashamed Niven fan

I first read this book when I was in high school. Twenty-some years later I was happy to spend a credit on the book because I wanted to read it but was afraid I couldn't hold the book and the steering wheel at the same time.

It is a brilliant, imaginative story about a world that 10 authors could spend their entire career creating stories about.

Tom Parker does a fantastic job with the characters. It was so good I listened to it on both the journey and the return trip.
