Historia
His dad was the town troublemaker, and I was the son of a cop. We couldn't have been more different, yet we were best friends, had each other's backs, and kept each other's secrets. "What you are, I am," we always said. Then one night irrevocably changed our lives forever. It's 10 years before I see Gage again, and instantly I can tell he's not the same boy I fell in love with. We're both haunted and hardened by the memory of that night - of everything we did and saw.

Beautiful and captivating story I could stop once I started
Revisado: 05-06-21
This selection caught my attention only because the narrator and my husband have the same name. As a mixed race cis gay man in my late 40’s I could Identify with Joey. All of the realistic challenges and issues gay kids face were mentioned. I could see each of the characters representing someone in my own life and was really moved in parts. This book reinforces a lot of thoughts in my mind and I’m eager to listen to more by this author. Thank you!

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Emotional and heartfelt story
Revisado: 06-26-19
Thank you for sharing your journey of putting the missing pieces together and bringing people together. I am blessed that I personally haven't experienced war or its effects on immediate family. I am continuously amazed at just how much of our short history as a republic and the continued sorrow of the families that have lost sons, daughters, siblings and parents fall by the roadside. There were a lot of great quotes and facts stated that I will have to go back, read again and write down.

Truly brilliant and informative narrative
Revisado: 04-17-19
Everyone should read this book! The stories shed some light on events that we’ve experienced and the lightbulb goes on and you think “hmm, I wonder....” as your eyes are invaded by the roaring river of tears.
To everyone involved, the author, the families of those affected to the victims of this horrific disease, thank you for sharing your stories and for your common selfish-less goal of informing the world so that others will know and have relief to understand what is happening in their own life and they are not crazy.

Couldnt stop listening
Revisado: 03-29-18
I think i played it continuously tonight. I would only stop it when i had to. It was a good story and not too predictable. The romance was a cheesy role play gay story but a realistic story of two people who loved each other but didn’t know how to communicate it - how true is that. Oh and they happened to be men. Highly recommended.
