This novel is so amazing and so beautifully narrated that I have listened to it twice. Perhaps one must be middle aged to appreciate the wisdom -- both tragic and comic -- of Jane Smiley's perspective on a traditional relationship lasting many years. This book is profound in its delineation of the ambivalence and the ambiguity implicit in marriage and the slow coming to consciousness of its 'heroine'.

I think this book could have done with a bit of editing (parts tend to drag), but overall it is an engrossing account of the author's childhood in Israel just before statehood to the early 60s, with references to his later adult life. The death of his mother during his early adolescence is central to the narrative both in form and meaning. I can't imagine a more sensitive narrator than Stefan Rudnicki.

After reading Albert Goldman's Elvis, I was interested in having another viewpoint on Elvis's life, so I embarked on listening to the first volume of this alternative biography, Last Train to Memphis. I slogged my way through it and hoped that the second volume, Careless Love, would be more stimulating. It is not. It is stupefyingly boring and I can hardly force myself to finish listening. Now I really don't care if Goldman took too many liberties with the material he gathered on Elvis because at least he tried to delve below the surface and speculate on the nature of the personality and motivations generating the events of Elvis's life. Careless Love deliberately stays on the surface and as such is numbingly tedious.

Rarely write a review, but the melding of prose and reader was so perfect. I don't care about the historical accuracy ... it was psychologically convincing and mesmerizing.
