Terrible narrator
Revisado: 01-11-25
Story was not bad but it was so hard to listen to this book with the narrator. Inconsistent accents, overinflection, just really terrible audio version.

Historia
The worst thing to ever happen on Hemlock Circle occurred in Ethan Marsh’s backyard. One July night, ten-year-old Ethan and his best friend and neighbor, Billy, fell asleep in a tent set up on a manicured lawn in a quiet, quaint New Jersey cul-de-sac. In the morning, Ethan woke up alone. During the night, someone had sliced the tent open with a knife and taken Billy. He was never seen again. Thirty years later, Ethan has reluctantly returned to his childhood home. Plagued by bad dreams and insomnia, he begins to notice strange things happening in the middle of the night.

Slow start, picked up at end; bad narrator
Revisado: 06-27-24
Book was VERY slow until about 3/4 of the way through, picked up at the end.
Audiobook very difficult to listen to. Narrator was terrible. Why did the adult characters have a “Valley Girl” California accent? This was supposed to take place in Jersey? The female police officer sounded straight out of the Bronx…just awful narration/accents. Adult characters sound like whiny teenagers…they’re supposed to be 40 yrs old??? Sounds like 14 yr olds throughout the book.
Book was slightly redeemed when I read Kindle version and did not listen to it.

Terrible narrator, read the book instead
Revisado: 05-03-24
Good story with twists but the narrator was so horrible that I found myself tuning her out and missing what was happening in the book. Every male voice sounds as if they are drunk and slurring their words.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

This was such a fantastic book! Also, it is one of the first audible books I have thoroughly enjoyed in quite some time. FINALLY, an audiobook with stellar narrators who really bring the characters to life. BRAVA! 🐙📖🎧❤️❤️

I am one of those people who always finish a book once I start. I’m also a voracious reader, set a goal of reading 100 books every year (Jan-Jan), and I only review books that leave me with an extremely strong reaction, either positive or negative.
I started listening to this book because I needed something light yet interesting for a 12-14hr round trip drive. I should have stopped as soon as I heard the following line on page 8: “She preferred her cases much colder anyway, like a bottle of Bud Light straight from the cooler, and this one had never gotten to be anything other than lukewarm”. But I tortured myself for another 57 minutes until the combination of horrific writing and narration caused me to stop the audiobook. I did attempt to read the written version on my Kindle, I could not even get through an full chapter. If you are on the fence about listening or reading this, climb back down. I can honestly say, this is the worst book I’ve come across in the past year (365 days).

Historia
When Annalee Ahlberg goes missing, her children fear the worst. Annalee is a sleepwalker whose affliction manifests in ways both bizarre and devastating. Once, she merely destroyed the hydrangeas in front of her Vermont home. More terrifying was the night her older daughter, Lianna, pulled her back from the precipice of the Gale River Bridge.

Good story, TERRIBLE narration!
Revisado: 01-25-17
What would have made The Sleepwalker better?
Different narrators. While Cady McClain narrating the voice of the main character, Lianna, was not bad, her narration of Paige and Gavin were whiny and sing-songy, almost unbearable. However, the WORST was Grace Experience's narration of Paige as an adult. I almost turned it off and returned the book just because of her short narrations. It sounded as if she were over-acting, her voice was grating. I did not like her narration in The Guest Room (horrible, fake Eastern European accent), but this was worse. I hope Mr. Bohjalian or his editors choose more talented narrators for his next novel, and not just pick someone because she is his daughter.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sleepwalker?
The twist at the end was very good.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Cady McClain and Grace Experience ?
ANYONE!
Any additional comments?
I think I would have enjoyed this book so much more if I would have read it instead of listened to it. I think I missed a lot of important information that was given by adult Paige (read by Grace Experience) that I completely zoned out during because I could not tolerate her narration.

Anya Savikin lived among well-to-do Russian Jews in Poland, in a world more like Tolstoy's than our own, until the first bombing of Warsaw and the chaos that ensued. Her story incarnates the strength and love of Eastern European Jewry, before and after their decimation.

Incredibly moving
Revisado: 08-09-14
Would you consider the audio edition of Anya to be better than the print version?
I listened to the audible version in the concomitantly while alternating reading the print version at home. I actually liked the audible version slightly better if only for the pronunciation of some of the foreign words. I am Lithuanian (and Jewish) and some of the Lithuanian names and words used in the book are difficult, but Kathe Mazur did a fantastic job.
What did you like best about this story?
Too short
Who was the most memorable character of Anya and why?
Anya. I just enjoyed the way her character matured and developed throughout the novel.
Any additional comments?
I don't know why I waited so long to listen to/read this book. It's a classic, beautifully written, and I was so sad when it was done. It made my drives back and forth to work every day feel like they were 5 minutes instead of 50 minutes.
