Historia
The story of Britain from the earliest settlements in 3000BC to the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. To look back at the past is to understand the present. In this vivid account of over 4,000 years of British history, Simon Schama takes us on an epic journey which encompasses the very beginnings of the nation's identity, when the first settlers landed on Orkney. From the successes and failures of the monarchy to the daily life of a Roman soldier stationed on Hadrian's Wall, Schama gives a vivid, fascinating account of the many different stories and struggles that lie behind the growth of our island nation.

Excellent history, read surprisingly well.
Revisado: 04-29-25
This book gives an excellent overview of British history through Queen Elizabeth I. The writing is careful, engaging, and learned. It is difficult to read a book like this in an engaging way, and, indeed, the reading is not completely engrossing, but it is interesting enough.

Terrific production of a classic play
Revisado: 05-07-23
The play is classic, and I liked the script but didn't love it. The performance, however, was terrific and really lifted it off the page in a way I find rare for audio productions.

Historia
The Peloponnesian War drags on and on with no end in sight, and the tough-minded Lysistrata has had enough. Men! - always making stupid decisions that affect everyone. Women's opinions are never listened to. Taking matters into her own hands, Lysistrata convenes a meeting of women from warring city-states across Greece and calls for a sex strike. It's a hard sell, but in the end, it is agreed: They will withhold sex until the war is brought to hasty a close.

Excellent play, mostly good performances.
Revisado: 07-31-21
The play is hilariously alive and fresh for one written 2400+ years ago. I kept remarking on things I couldn't believe Aristophanese wrote. The performances keep it dynamic and mostly enable one to distinguish the different characters, but the chorus sounds weird and metallic, and at times other things sound a bit off. Overall quite good, though.

Historia
Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

I love this story, and the voice actors are terrific. Truly distinct characters and an engaging narration make this the best audiobook I've listened to.

This collection of three of Henrik Ibsen's most well-known and important plays is voiced by a sparkling cast and features music, SFX and a full soundscape. Born in 1828, Norwegian playwright, theatre director and poet Ibsen, wrote in Danish yet lived for many years in Italy and Germany. Heralded as one the most distinguished dramatists after Shakespeare, by the early 20th century A Doll's House became the world's most performed play.

Top Notch
Revisado: 07-24-21
Best audio play I have listened to. The performances are excellent, with distinct voices and texture for each character that keep it dynamic. The story is gripping and provocative, almost perfectly made for an audio performance.
