Not the best Kingsbridge book, but it's great
Revisado: 10-29-23
As the title suggests, this isn't the best in the series, but it hits all the KF notes of memorable, developed characters, conflict and romance, and interweaving with actual historical events. For fans of the other Kingsbridge novels, I highly recommend.

Wonderful story
Revisado: 01-12-23
A small story with a huge heart. I had very little knowledge about this story or the author before listening, but I was hooked right away and couldn't stop listening. Listening to this story is spending time with real, heartfelt, and heart warming characters. A superb listen and most certainly one of my recent favourites. If you're wondering whether you'll like this, you will.

Historia
During his storied career as head coach of the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, Phil Jackson won more championships than any coach in the history of professional sports. This is the story of a preacher's kid from North Dakota who grew up to be one of the most innovative leaders of our time. Eleven times, Jackson led his teams to the ultimate goal: the NBA championship - six times with the Chicago Bulls and five times with the Los Angeles Lakers. This book is full of revelations.

Great start, trails off at the end
Revisado: 01-08-22
This is a good summary of Jackson's life and career as a player and coach. the first half to two-thirds are excellent, with much insight into Jackson's thinking and philosophy interwoven with basketball stories. the last part devolves into a rushed summary of his last few seasons with the Lakers.

Zahn's continuation of the Star Wars saga in the time after Return of the Jedi is at least as good as the films. Thompson's performance is superb - one of the best I've listened to!

Historia
The cabin had always been a special retreat for Isherwood Williams, a haven from the demands of society. But one day while hiking, Ish was bitten by a rattlesnake, and the solitude he had so desired took on dire new significance. Ish headed home when he finally felt himself again—and noticed the strangeness almost immediately. No cars passed him on the road; the gas station not far from his cabin looked abandoned; and he was shocked to see the body of a man on the roadside near a small town. Without a radio or phone, Ish had no idea of humanity’s abrupt demise.

The birth of a genre
Revisado: 06-30-21
From what I understand, this is the first of the "post-apocalyptic" genre that is now so popular. the story itself is a little dry and at times slow, but that is more than made up by the character development of its main character, Ish. I came to this book from the video game series "The Last of Us" , where a minor character is named after this story's protagonist.

In this, her first book, now available in audio, Simard brings us into her world, the intimate world of the trees, in which she brilliantly illuminates the fascinating and vital truths—that trees are not simply the source of timber or pulp, but are a complicated, interdependent circle of life.

Wonderful tale of personal science
Revisado: 06-15-21
This is the story of a woman's discovery that plants in forests are interconnected in ways that few in the scientific community had considered. Dr Simard spends much of her career trying to convince the forestry community to look at forests in a different way that simple cash crops. The author's personal life is well-woven into the story as well and presents both uplifting and sad moments. The narration (by the author) is excellent and I doubt could have been done better by anyone else.

Expertly read, tough story
Revisado: 06-06-21
The narration by Mr Baker is very well done - some of the best I've listened to in an audiobook. The story was not what I expected. The father is a very difficult personality to spend a whole story with, which made the listen a challenge.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Very hard to review - read below
Revisado: 03-28-21
The story is fantastic - if you're listening it's likely you know some of the story already. The production is fantastic (in parts - particularly the chapter starts by the princess). The major issue is that the use of voice actors is not consistent - e.g. sometime the Baron Harkonnen is voiced by the narrator, other times by a separate voice actor. worth a listen, but I don't know why they'd do this.

Historia
David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. When his specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many might have given up, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet, found the first fish that he recognized, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time, he introduced one clever innovation.

Revisado: 03-05-21
Coming into the book, after hearing the author on CBC, I wasn't expecting as much personal information from the author. I was hoping for a book that dwelt more on "why fish don't exist". I did enjoy the book, and the author did a good job of reading, I was just hoping for more taxonomy

Historia
In the late 1890s, Edmund Dene Morel, a young British shipping company agent, noticed something strange about the cargoes of his company's ships as they arrived from and departed for the Congo. Incoming ships were crammed with valuable ivory and rubber. Outbound ships carried little more than soldiers and firearms. Correctly concluding that only slave labor could account for these cargoes, Morel almost singlehandedly made this slave-labor regime the premier human rights story in the world.

Difficult listen, but enlightening
Revisado: 12-26-20
This is a hard "story" to hear - I was moved to tears more than once. I use quotes because it is the fact this is not fiction that makes the actions of so many of the characters so difficult to comprehend. Hochschild's research, pacing, and balance of anecdote with analysis is perfect - it's no wonder this book won two significant awards in 1999. be prepared to be moved.
