Stick with it
Revisado: 04-02-24
Thank you to whoever wrote the review that they almost gave up but were glad they didn't - they came to like the main character. I also nearly gave up on it - the early part of life falling apart goes on for quite a long time. And the MC isn't very likable at that point. I'm glad I stuck with it - I really enjoyed it once it moved on. The MC turns out the be very likable and I appreciated the historical aspects of the story. So don't give up too soon.

Giving up
Revisado: 12-03-23
The premise sounded interesting; however I'm finding the non-stop action exhausting. Also, I like to do other things while I listen and this book requires more attention. I don't usually have a problem following unfamiliar worlds with new language/terms - but this moves so quickly that it requires focus. I only got around 1 and a half hours into it, and so far it's been non-stop fighting against a variety of protagonists. This is a great book for action lovers who don't mind the focus being on getting out of predicaments, but not so much for those of us who prefer action balanced with character and world development.

They’ve settled into separate, well-ordered lives beneath the same roof, and are content to stay that way―or so Emmeline thinks. Fun and lively tale
Revisado: 06-04-23
I picked this up, then had been putting off reading it. Looking at the summary, it just sounded tedious. But it was done as a light-hearted and fun romp. Even when elements were added to the story that could have made it heavy or awkward, they were handled in a light-hearted way. It never felt plausible, but I don't require that from the books I enjoy. It was well written and well narrated, and I enjoyed the time I spent listening to it.

Historia
Laos, 1979: Retired coroner Siri Paiboun and his wife, Madame Daeng, have never been able to turn away a misfit. As a result they share their small Vientiane house with an assortment of homeless people, mendicants, and oddballs. One of these oddballs is Noo, a Buddhist monk who rides out on his bicycle one day and never comes back, leaving only a cryptic note in the refrigerator - a plea to help a fellow monk escape across the Mekong River to Thailand. Naturally, Siri can't turn down the adventure.

I just finished it and I'm very confused
Revisado: 01-13-23
I've always enjoyed this series (except for the volume where Dr Siri is in Cambodia - that was a bit too heavy for me) - and I've usually been able to follow the story easily enough. In this book I could follow individual events well enough, but I couldn't thread the various events together to make a whole picture. It must just be me though, since I don't see other complaints about this. I probably would have enjoyed this more if I'd read it - and had been better able to keep track of who was who.

Historia
Peter Pan is missing; Neverland is in trouble. For adults, that might not matter all that much, but for children—whose dreams and imagination draw strength from the wild god’s power—the magic we take for granted in the real world is in danger of being lost forever. Such is the life of a now grown-up Michael Darling.

For non-stop adventure lovers
Revisado: 11-23-22
I enjoyed the first half but then it started to drag. I did finish it, but now I'm wondering why because I stopped caring. The narration is good, it's the story itself that got weary for me. It's all adventure and action and nothing else. The premise is good, it's a creative world - it's just exhausting. It is YA - so the action is never scary. That is fine with me. I just want more from the characters. For someone who is all about the action, this could be fun.

Historia
When I answered an ad for a caretaker at Saint Mark’s Sanctuary, I thought I’d be dusting chandeliers and polishing floors. I didn’t expect to be tricked into a curse, going into debt to a monster, and being forced to take a self-paced “let’s learn magic” course so I can fix a 2,000-year-old problem. And that monster? Not your ordinary, everyday beast. He has hooves, and horns, and fur on his legs. But you know where he doesn’t have fur? Yeah. There. Which is fine. Except he doesn’t wear pants.

Better than I expected
Revisado: 10-19-22
This was an easy read - fun and engaging. If you don't like (just a little) hot sex or swearing - give it a miss. Otherwise, if you enjoy a fun fantasy romp, give it a try. I enjoyed it more than I'd expected to from the description and other reviews.

I thought she'd mature
Revisado: 09-19-22
I liked the basic storyline and I could see how she'd be torn between hate and love for Adrian. She was awful to him, but there were reasons. However the bottom line is that she believes anyone who doesn't support her every demand deserves to die and is ready to behead them on the spot. She is entitled, brash, demanding, and thinks she knows more than anyone else - never mind that she just arrived to a whole new culture. What I liked best about the book was Isolde learning that what she was taught was the history of her land was simply not true. A great example of how two groups can have such strong and diametrically opposed convictions based on different interpretations of the same events. (Sound familiar?!) But I really thought that Isolde would mature as a leader. She didn't. Isolde just gets more ruthless as the book goes on. I'm not sorry I read book one, but I doubt I'll continue the series.

I've listened to this dozens of times
Revisado: 08-25-22
I love this book. The first time through I listened to it like a regular book. There is a fair amount of detail about the building process that I couldn't really understand, but that didn't bother me. It is such an interesting account of what it takes to live in the Alaskan wilderness. This is something I could never have done myself, so I get some vicarious thrill to experience it through Richard Proenneke's descriptions. He is pretty amazing.
And I continue to listen to it over and over again. Only now I do it at night when I have trouble sleeping. The storytelling is done with a calm voice, making it easy to drift in and out of sleep. And I continue to enjoy it.

Honoring the wish of her late grandmother, Maura Donovan visits the small Irish village where her Gran was born-though she never expected to get bogged down in a murder mystery. Nor had she planned to take a job in one of the local pubs, but she finds herself excited to get to know the people who knew her Gran. In the pub, she's swamped with drink orders as everyone in town gathers to talk about the recent discovery of a nearly 100-year-old body in a nearby bog.

Kept my interest
Revisado: 05-30-22
I got this on sale despite mixed reviews and found I enjoyed it. The MC's Boston accent was slightly jarring but not a deal breaker. And Maura does tend to get caught up in the same mental loops with lots of repetition about what her life has been like and not knowing what she wants, but heck. I do that too - my mind gets stuck in repetitive thought loops. Overall it's a pleasant way to hang out awhile in a small village in Cork County Ireland.

interesting vs engaging
Revisado: 04-10-22
The texture and feel of this book is different from most listens - it's like listening from the outside rather than the inside. It's like being told a story from far away. It is interesting, but didn't keep my attention enough to listen all the way through. I listened to it a little each day and then on to other books that made me feel more inside the story. I assume it's the way the book was written because I've loved this narrator in other books. And the accents sound great to me, not that I'm very discerning. The story is told through the eyes of Shey, the matriarch, but I never felt like I knew her. The language is beautiful and its a saga that unfolds over the life of a marriage, centered around their vacation home on the Island in Madagascar. The story is really about the island and how it affects people; the people who come to visit (including outsiders who live there) and the natives who where born there. It's an interesting portrait of a time and place and how it evolves during the formative years of their marriage. The island is magical and mystical, but again this is all experienced from a distance, like someone is telling a story at a campfire. It's a good story, told largely as a series of anecdotes, just not one that pulls you inside the story so that you experience it too.
