Historia
Robert Sapolsky’s Behave, his now classic account of why humans do good and why they do bad, pointed toward an unsettling conclusion: We may not grasp the precise marriage of nature and nurture that creates the physics and chemistry at the base of human behavior, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Now, in Determined, Sapolsky takes his argument all the way, mounting a brilliant (and in his inimitable way, delightful) full-frontal assault on the pleasant fantasy that there is some separate self telling our biology what to do.

A Pseudo-Philosophical Science Slog
Revisado: 07-23-24
The author says he wants to convince you of determinism. What follows is a partial attempt at that, partial attempt at science and math education (the interesting part), but a complete failure to really interact with the philosophical work already done in this area of study.
He proves nothing but advocates for everything, although apparently for reasons totally out of his control.

Historia
We are all looking for significance and meaning in our lives. The world tells us that this comes from dreaming big, achieving personal success, and making a big impact. But the Bible says that self-worth is found in knowing our Creator, and contentment is found in discovering his purpose for our lives.

The theology is sound, the message is clear, and the timing will always be right to read or reread this little book.

Historia
Jesus told his followers that the entirety of the Old Testament’s law is encapsulated in the commands to love God and to love their neighbors as themselves. In Reforming Criminal Justice: A Christian Proposal, Matthew T. Martens argues that love of neighbor must be the animating force for true reformation of the criminal justice system, obligating us to seek the best for both the criminally victimized and the criminally accused.

Excellent presentation of the CJ system
Revisado: 01-04-24
Martens’ book is readable, well-organized, and appropriately presented for the lay person.
It serves the dual purposes of helping the reader to develop a sort of theology of criminal justice, as well as an introduction to the history of the American criminal justice system. I cannot say I come to all the same conclusions as he does, but I am grateful for his heart and work. Highly recommend.

Historia
Both astonishing and prophetic, The Abolition of Man remains one of C. S. Lewis's most controversial works. Lewis sets out to persuade his audience of the ongoing importance and relevance of universal objective values, such as courage and honor, and the foundational necessity of natural law. He also makes a cogent case that a retreat from these pillars of our educational system, even if in the name of "scientism", would be catastrophic. National Review lists it as number seven on their "100 Best Nonfiction Books of the 20th Century".
