This book is the next stage in trauma healing. If you’ve already done a lot of talk therapy or alternative therapies and your nervous system is still dysregulated, this book offers felt-sense practices to cultivate resilience (meaning you can actually start incorporating what you’ve learned in therapy without feeling vastly overwhelmed by triggers). A good follow up book is “your perfect right”, which teaches non-aggressive assertiveness.

Burned out, Bitter, & Hopeful

Recommended by my therapist. Great book. Great performance. Great storytelling.

A warning though…the middle portion with “the real enemy” gets heavy. It can feel very overwhelming to get hammered by the realties of how the system is designed to benefit wealthy, cis gendered, white men.

The authors’ voices seem to, understandably, be filled with bitterness and resentment for the unfairness of our circumstances.

However, the overall message is of hope — with empowering research for how to reframe, reshape, and restore our health, wellbeing, and faith in ourselves to rise up better than before, WITHOUT taking on more responsibilities, trying to do it all and be it all.
