The only thing of value I can give a guy worth hundreds of millions of dollars
Revisado: 04-12-25
Alex gets five stars for this book; if ten were available, he’d get those too, plus some. I’ve devoured this book for a second time and I am going to go through it a third time, sluicing the most applicable strategies for my consulting business. Although my business doesn’t have a large enough TAM to put me in the millions of dollars a year category, I use Alex‘s hard earned wisdom to sell my core offer while making a comfortable living.

Historia
The promise of public education is excellence for all. But that promise has seldom been kept for low-income children of color in America. In How the Other Half Learns, teacher and education journalist Robert Pondiscio focuses on Success Academy, the network of controversial charter schools in New York City founded by Eva Moskowitz, who has created something unprecedented in American education: a way for large numbers of engaged and ambitious low-income families of color to get an education for their children that equals and even exceeds what wealthy families take for granted.

A real tour de force!
Revisado: 09-14-21
If you're looking for an even-handed, straight-spoken, well-considered, extraordinarily cogent analysis of public policy ranging from charter schools to economic/race-based equity (and a lot in between such as testing, lotteries, and student discipline in schools), this book is THE one. (My apologies for the wheel barrel full of adjectives, but each one is apt.) Pondiscio's engaging writing (and narrative performance) immediately draws you into the school day of Eva Moscowitz's Success Academy Charter Schools where you will feel like you're sitting in the classroom as it happens. When he discusses controversial topics, whether he is conveying an interview with a parent who is frustrated with the number of times her child was suspended, a conversation with a teacher or principal about SA's faculty turnover rate, or waxing eloquently about the pros and con's of the criticism's leveled against Moscowitz, Pondiscio is transparent in sharing his own ambivalence--a quality in a writer that is refreshing at a time when so many proponents of parental choices in education are so dogmatic about their positions.

A forgotten gem of a book by a forgotten author
Revisado: 12-10-19
The first self development product I recall purchasing some thirty years ago was a set of cassette tapes on negotiating by Roger Dawson, published by Nightingale-Conant. In the decades since, I have purchased many N-G products without ever realizing until I listened to this book what a powerhouse the founder, Earl Nightingale, was in his own right.
This book not only has freshly inspired me with its timeless reminders of what it takes to be successful, it turned me onto another forgotten author from the 1940s whose books I am now reading (Dr. William J. Reilly). If you love radio talks, I think you will especially enjoy this book which contains hundreds of Earl's radio messages (which Wikipedia says was the largest internationally syndicated program in its time).
Bonus: If it matters to you (it does to me), Earl was a US Marine in WWII and one of 15 survivors of the attack on the USS Arizona. Being a former Marine myself, this causes me to identify with him all the more.

If you're ready to change, this is the book
Revisado: 08-17-16
Would you listen to The Little Book of Big Change again? Why?
I mean, WOW!! For anyone like me that has struggled for decades with one or more unwanted habits, this book is a permanent game-changer. In addition to Amy's insights into the nature of thoughts & emotions as they relate to addictions, obsessions, compulsivity, etc. being spot on, her book is extraordinarily well written and refreshing in it's simple (but not simplistic), clear, easy approach. And it's completely devoid of all the usual psycho-baffle-gab so commonly found in the self help genre. As a result of the freedom I acquired through the insights written about by Amy, I am not only recommending this book to my own clients, I am retaining Amy as my own life coach. If you are looking to free yourself of one or more unwanted habits, even if you've tried everything under the sun, the answers in this book are what you're looking for. If you are already a practicer of mindfulness, this book will add even more to your understanding.

Any additional comments?
The story itself is fantastic, however, the producers at Audible need to get serious about the kind of excellence repeatedly emphasized in Brandon's book by:
1. editing out retakes
2. making sure the professional fucking reader pronounces words correctly. VERY DISTRACTING Audible! A fifth grader knows you don't "cut a swayth" through somehting and so on. C'mon!

Luminita: You have written an outstanding book but I urge you to get the producers re-do the audio with appropriate narration. The reader cannot sound like she's doing an infomercial while telling the tragic story of your father's horrific abuse.

Historia
For over 200 years, the East India Company was the largest and most powerful mercantile firm in Britain and Asia. Set up to procure Asian goods for British consumers, the Company's business network spanned Persia, India, China, Indonesia, and North America. In the late 1700s, its career took a dramatic turn as the Company lost ground as a trading firm, but founded an empire in India. Why did a merchant firm end up being an empire builder? Why did politics mesh so closely with the conduct of business in this time? This new account of the East India Company answers these questions by taking a fresh look at the world of Indian business.

This little book is an excellent overview of the 275 year existence of the first modern corporation. Anyone interested this topic will find this to be an excellent source. It contains many interesting dates, names and significant historical events. I also enjoyed the audio format because I would not how to pronounce the trough of Indian words, names and places that would naturally be contained in such a book.

Funny and Instructive
Revisado: 08-17-13
After a friend read Lamott's humorous passage to me about elementary school lunchroom protocols, I had to buy this book. I laughed aloud all the way through it and learned many useful insights for improving my writing (e.g., writing a "shitty first draft" as a way of overcoming the perfectionism that besieges most writers when they sit down to write).
Lamott also opens a window to her own soul, sharing a wide swath of experiences to include how the passing of her father (also an author) affected her development as a writer. These personal sections are refreshingly non-melodramatic. Rather, the reader feels intimately connected with Lamott. The effect is one of trust in who she is and what she says.

Benioff rocks this story!
Revisado: 08-17-13
Would you consider the audio edition of City of Thieves to be better than the print version?
I found the audio format preferable to print in that I would not know how to pronounce various Russian words and cities, etc.
Have you listened to any of Ron Perlman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Loved the Russian accents! Not overdone and only occasional for emphasis in certain passages. Nice interpretation, Ron.
Any additional comments?
After noting that Benioff wrote or co-wrote many of the excellent screenplays for Game of Thrones, I became interested in his work. This novel is a gripping account of grandfather's experiences as a young Russian man in the first winter of WWII when Nazi Germany attacked Communist Russia. The writing is extraordinary and compelling. I feel present in the story.
