A poor follow up

I’m conflicted, I absolutely loved the first book and all the characters especially the pacing of the story with the drip feed of world building was nothing like this sequel. This follow up feels like it’s constantly starting and stopping with the world building more like a waterfall in some sections. I like new protagonists but these two aren’t nearly as charming as the past trio. The book could have been 25% shorter and it would have helped. The performer does not do well with women’s voices. Overall a regrettable experience that I hope does not continue into the third book.

Gunmetal Greatness

Right off the bat the world building and character writing were excellent. I felt how they felt, and the rights and wrongs of these characters made things murky and hard to navigate and made me very invested in their stories. I enjoy books that aren’t predictable and this is one of them. A great entry into a series that is solid enough on its own, I can’t wait to continue.

An engaging tale of relationships

I must say this was not what I expected going into this book. I had my preconceptions on the Vikings and their culture, I was hoping for an action packed adventure of a young boy becoming a man but what I got was a story of relationships, family, love, politics and kings. Yes there were war and battles but I stayed for the play like drama and the unexpected turns that came about. This is a very good foundation for an epic tale and I’m excited to see where this ends! I recommend this for anyone wanting to sink their teeth into a culture, and time to really pay attention to the details.
