The narrative provides information about ecology and zoology that are not in the movie. I appreciate that.

The story is so good that I stayed up until 3am listening to it! I cared for the characters. The author wove the stories of Cilka's two times in captivity so well, showing how the experiences in the concentration camp affected the way she thought and acted in the prison camp.

My son was born at 29 weeks and spent four weeks in the NICU. He will be turning 25 this summer. There were events and emotions in this story that we lived. My son was able to pull out his ng tube faster than the nurses could get the tape to tape it down. Watching his bottle feedings, knowing they were the last thing keeping him there. The anxiety as we left that we were on our own.

But then, the glorious feeling of carrying him past the length of his monitoring wires as we made our way out of the NICU! Such a weight was lifted.

I read this as a child and had vague memories of the plot. (Several were incorrect. Mary was not the sick child.)

In this time of stress, I wanted something simple to relax with. I found it! I will be starting over right away because I am certain there are things I missed. Positive thinking is important for everyone.

I am thinking of recommending it to a teenager who just had scoliosis surgery a month ago and is now 3 ½ inches taller! She is building up her strength and stamina just like Colin. Like Colin, people (her schoolmates) commented about her appearance. It hurt her. I think The Secret Garden would help her feel better about her journey. She isn't alone

A Struggle

I struggled to finish this book. In fact, I removed it from my phone three times. I did listen to it because it was selected with my one credit this month.

The most troublesome aspect was the narrator. She read with little emotion and her timing was not fluid. It was like listening to my elementary school students read aloud, one sentence at a time.

There is another reason I did not like the narrator's performance and it might seem petty. The first time I put the book away it was because she pronounced "Oregon" in a way that residents do not use. I live here. The way she said was unprofessional in my opinion . I feel she should have researched the way locals and national newscasters say it.

The story made me feel like I was reading my students' work. I felt like she included too many side stores and characters that don't help develop the main story. How does taking classes move the story along? How do the events with the K-9 move the story? How did the situation of the office assistant's romance help? There was not a strong sense of time passing between the one night stand and the main characters moving in together. Is it necessary to share the amount of times a couple has sex and the details?

I could continue with my list of unnecessary plot items, but I will not. I will be exchanging the book, though.

This is a wonderful story. It brought back memories of my summer as a camp counselor and years as an elementary school teacher. I was, in fact, upset that I had to wait for the release of chapter two. I NEEDED to know!

Now that I have the entire story, I have listened to it three times just to catch things I might have missed. I hope another book comes out because I'd like some answers.

I have listened to many books about hiking on the PCT. This book was like so many others. I wish there had been more description of the action. This was the summer of many fires in the area. There could have been so much more to tell. I did enjoy the description of the snake encounters.

The rhythm of the sentences became repetitive, especially during conversations. These issues, combined with the narrator's rate of speech and lack of emotion, caused me to want to stop listening.

Like all through-hikers, though, I wanted to get to Canada. I did.

The story deserves respect. That is why I gave it the score I did and did not quit listening.

The narrator's performance was almost painful. It sounded metallic and like it was synthesized. The rate and intonation did not change. It was a hard thing to listen to.

This is hilarious. The way he uses songs reminds me of Adam Sandler.

I hope this performance gets him known all over.

Listening to this felt like I was listening to my students read out loud. The timing was not natural. I could not finish the story.
