Historia
As a child, Evan Smoak was plucked out of a group home, raised and trained as an off-the-books assassin for the government as part of the Orphan program. When he broke with the program and went deep underground, he left with a lot of secrets in his head that the government would do anything to make sure never got out. When he remade himself as The Nowhere Man, dedicated to helping the most desperate in their times of trouble, Evan found himself slowly back on the government's radar.

Scott Brick is THE WORST
Revisado: 01-09-24
I enjoy the Orphan X storylines, however gratuitous and implausible. Unlike many others, I also enjoy Joey and I think she is an excellent way of adding some comic relief to break things up. But for the love of the Gods, Gregg, please stop paying Scott Brick to narrate these novels!!! Please. He is so ridiculous, over the top, and irritating that he ruins these stories. I pay for Audible because I don't have the time or the attention span to just sit and read anymore, and I fear this will be my last adventure with X and Joey because of Mr. Brick. I just can't take him anymore. He is truly awful.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Revisado: 12-26-23
Another decent fantasy story and imaginative world ruined by the author's misogyny and his transparent projections. I couldn't finish it. I made it 16 hours to the part in the bar with Denna, and I can't do another minute. Just... ugh. Women in this book are either the character's mother or two dimensional wet dreams with no value beyond their looks. Kovothe is also annoying, unrelateable, and who every "Um... actually..." guy thinks they are in real life. Too bad.

Absolutely Breathtaking
Revisado: 03-12-22
This is the most heart wrenching and beautiful novel I have listened to in a long, long time. I don't think I could find a single fault even if I wanted to. Start to finish it is a rare work of absolute perfection. It should also be required reading for every white, entitled high school student in this country.
Narration was also superb.
Take a bow, Ms. Tahir.

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was.

Meh. What's all the fuss about?
Revisado: 10-16-21
It was an OK story. I'm not sure why this story in particular has everyone freaking out. There was a simple, predictable plot twist and it was well written, but it's nothing unique. You won't hate it, but it's not going to blow your mind.

Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

One of the best hands down
Revisado: 01-03-21
I really do not understand any of the comments that have been made about this book being "boring" or "slow". It's true that this book is very emotional, but it's anything but boring. I'm super picky about stories being interesting, intelligent and well laid out. This is the best story I've listen to all year. No contest. I devored it in one day. I couldn't give it any higher recommendation.

David Baldacci wrote... this?!
Revisado: 06-11-19
I got this in the 2 for 1 credit sales and I should have known there was a reason it was in the proverbial bargain aisle. David Baldacci is an excellent writer and before now, I've only ever loved everything he's written. This book feels like he came up with the premise, but then handed it off to someone else to actually write. The characters are all shallow and unlike able. The premises is not only implausible... that's forgivable if done well... the details that make up the premises are even more ridiculous. The dialog is painfully cliché, and the way the characters interact makes no sense. For instance, two Secret Service agents who've barely know each a day, immediately have an argument no one would have with anyone they haven't known for years; A woman who the protagonist slept with a long time ago, and clearly doesn't like or want around, pops up and is all but dismissed. Then she comes back around and starts demanding answers as if he owes her any explanation and he gives her the information.
And of course Scott Brick is chosen to over narrate this, because what world would we live in if he wasn't the guy? Of topic... I wish I could figure out why he is the mystery thriller go to guy. I do not get it. Not even a little bit. A whole world of great, authentic male narrators who don't narrate as though every scene in a story needs Jaws theme music level of suspense... and yet, they just keep sticken with Scotty "every word in this story needs to convey a crises" Brick.
Anyway, unless you like long, mediocre mysteries, with no relatability and poor character development, I'd skip this one and pick up literally any other Baldacci thriller. Even if it's narrated by The Brickster.

Disgusted By The Message
Revisado: 05-26-19
It did have potential, although as others noted it was so hard to get into and so slooowww. Now that I'm almost done, however, I find my preservance has resulting in me discovering I am reading another disgusting cliche where the girl is now kissing the boy whole treated poorly and cruelly. And of course he only did it because deep down he really loves her. Nope. No can do. Not even going to finish it now. Returning immediately. Doesn't matter how good the ending may be (although that was suspect) , this is what rape culture looks like. As well as the reason women grow up thinking that men who treat them like shit, somehow love them deep down despite the abuse.
If you fancy yourself any level of feminist, skip it.

Scott Brick ruins a great thriller. Again.
Revisado: 02-04-19
Dear Authors Everywhere,
If you could just stop hiring Scott Brick to make even buttering toast or washing your face sound like THE.MOST.DRAMATIC.THING your character has ever done, that would be great. When everything the characters do is on his level, it's exhausting. Lol.
Good story. I just need a nap now.

On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person - but also that the cold-reading skills she's honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money. Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased...where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware's signature suspenseful style, an addictive thriller.

Slow and Way Too Drawn Out
Revisado: 02-03-19
I agree with a lot of other reviews. The story is an OK story. It would be much better as a short story. It was very redundant and slow, however the narration was incredible. Not Ruth Ware's best, but still a slightly OK listen.

The sound of the loose step sends her body into overdrive, and she rushes for the secret room behind the wall. The screech of old hinges echoes through the house as he enters her bedroom. He starts whistling. Three blind mice. Three blind mice. She slaps a hand over her mouth, stifling her scream. He’s coming for her, but that can’t be. She killed him last month.

A gripping, suspenseful side of Jana Deleon
Revisado: 11-29-17
Would you listen to another book narrated by Julie McKay?
She was not the best choice. If I have one complaint it is only that her narration is flat and almost robot-like when she isn't doing voices and accents. I wish someone else had been chosen.
Any additional comments?
I have read practically everything Jana DeLeon has written and this is my new favorite!! Much, much darker and more suspenseful than anything else she has ever written, this book kept me guessing until the end. I could not stop listening once I started. I highly recommend this for any fans of DeLeon that are also ok with darker, gorier material.
