Historia
A rare stamp and a corpse are discovered in Bath within hours of each other. As he investigates, Inspector Peter Diamond discovers that both the person who found the stamp and the victim belong to the Bloodhounds, an elite group of mystery lovers, who now urge Diamond to bring the murderer to justice. But there's a hitch: the body lies inside a padlocked houseboat and the only key is in the pocket of a man with an airtight alibi.

poor performance by the reader

I struggled through the story to the end. It was interesting to see how much difference the reader of an audiobook makes to your perception of the characters and plot.

Historia
Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond is the last detective: a genuine gumshoe, committed to door-stopping and deduction rather than fancy computer gadgetry. So when the naked body of a woman is found floating in the weeds in a lake near Bath with no one willing to identify her, no marks, and no murder weapon, his sleuthing abilities are tested to the limit.

so many surprises

I loved the characters and the twists and turns of the plot. It was also nice to read detective fiction written in the late 20th century.

Disappointing
Revisado: 07-18-22
Too many anachronisms and impossible stuff. Characters spoke with modern American idioms and acted like cartoonist renditions of what Americans think wartime Brits were like. And SO much driving around in cars. Someone needs to let the author know that petrol was rationed during the war.

Historia
It’s 2008, and things are falling apart: Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers are going under, and the residents of Pepys Road, London - a banker and his shopaholic wife, an old woman dying of a brain tumor and her graffiti-artist grandson, Pakistani shop owners and a shadowy refugee who works as the meter maid, the young soccer star from Senegal and his minder - are receiving anonymous postcards reading "We Want What You Have." Who is behind it? What do they want?

Historia
In this myth-busting book, Daniel Lieberman, professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University and a pioneering researcher on the evolution of human physical activity, tells the story of how we never evolved to exercise - to do voluntary physical activity for the sake of health. Using his own research and experiences throughout the world, Lieberman recounts without jargon how and why humans evolved to walk, run, dig, and do other necessary and rewarding physical activities while avoiding needless exertion.

The narration disappointing in places.
Revisado: 01-27-21
Stressing the wrong word in sentences makes them confusing. The narrator has a lovely voice and sometimes his narration is spot on but other times it seems as though he was not trying to understand what he was reading.

Historia
Youthful, ambitious Peter Schoeffer is on the verge of professional success as a scribe in Paris when his foster father, the wealthy merchant and bookseller Johann Fust, summons him home to corruption- riddled, feud-plagued Mainz to meet "a most amazing man." Johann Gutenberg, a driven and caustic inventor, has devised a revolutionary - and, to some, blasphemous - method of bookmaking: a machine he calls a printing press.

A feeling of the 15th century
Revisado: 03-13-17
So many historical novels just place modern characters in the past. This one gives you insight in a different world and a different way of thinking. I enjoyed listening to this even though the occasional mispronunciations made me wince. Does anyone pronounce "feral" as feeral? Perhaps some people do.

As a story this is a bit patchy but it is so interesting to see how a Victorian author describes psychopathic characters.
