Historia
On September 13, 2016, in the small town of Ashland, Ohio, emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from a terrified woman who claimed to be kidnapped. The man holding her hostage was Shawn Grate, a serial killer whom the press later dubbed “The Ladykiller.” A key to his conviction and death sentence were Grate’s extensive recorded confessions—all extracted by one woman: Detective Kim Mager.

Really good!
Revisado: 07-29-24
It seems to me that most serial killer cases start with law enforcement linking several crimes together, then looking for the culprit. This account describes an arrest for the kidnapping, rape, and torture of a local woman, but during interrogation, the police begin to suspect there are more crimes. The author, a police detective, is a highly skilled interrogator who gently leads the offender to reveal more and more about his crimes. It's absolutely fascinating, and very well-written. It's an inside look at how a case like this is built, which in true crime stories, is rare. it was hard to put down, but at the same time, I didn't want it to end. Both the perpetrator and his victims are presented as human beings, which makes the story even more interesting. Highly recommended!

As well-written as the first book, and left me yearning to dive into the next book. The authors have created characters who are interesting and compelling, and they know how to tell a story. I'm hooked!

Just couldn't get into it.
Revisado: 08-20-22
I finally figured out why I was having to make myself listen to this book. The main character acts heroically in the beginning, saving the life of a woman he's been directed to abandon. After that, instead of getting re-trained for something that will support his family, he becomes a mall cop -- no shame in that, but it doesn't have much of a future -- then joins a sleazebag agency and embarks on a mission that's destined to be a mess from beginning to end. He lies to his wife, and doesn't provide his employer or his co-workers information about his amputated leg, which potentially endangers others who'd like to come out of the mission alive, too. And I'm supposed to care about this guy enough to hang in there for several more hours and find out what happens to him? I realized I didn't.

Historia
Bestselling author Dan Pfeiffer dissects how the Right Wing built a massive, billionaire funded disinformation machine powerful enough to bend reality and nearly steal the 2020 election. From the perspective of someone who has spent decades on the frontlines of politics and media, Pfeiffer lays out how the Right Wing media apparatus works, where it came from, and what progressives can do to fight back against disinformation.

Unlistenable
Revisado: 08-12-22
I am going to ask for a return on this book. Audible, what were you thinking?
Dan Pfeiffer is an admired, credible author. He is not, however, someone whose talents include reading aloud for audiobook recording. That's not a criticism he should be upset about; not everyone can do narration. I am usually very tolerant of the differences in narrators; I've listened to many books that I considered of acceptable quality that others have thrown fits about. But this recording is the worst I've ever heard.
Not all of it is Pfeiffer's fault. The jarring, obvious editing is disgraceful and completely unacceptable. The recording process should have been halted early on, and someone should have worked with Pfeiffer on his speed and enunciation. And if that didn't help, then someone should have sat the author down and explained that his narration is just not going to cut it, and a professional narrator would need to be hired. That's hard to do, but someone at Audible is responsible for the quality of narration, and that person failed the author egregiously. Not everyone is good at narration, and the fact that they're reading their own book doesn't change that. Audible, you should be embarrassed to release such a recording to your listeners, and this listener is utterly disgusted that you did. When you did so, you failed your author. You had one job...
I hope the book will be re-recorded, and if it is, I'll happily spend a credit on it. If that doesn't happen, I'll likely buy a print copy of the book and read it. What Pfeiffer has to say is worth knowing. He has a unique perspective and viewpoint that is valuable. But honestly, I spent so much time being irritated at the too-fast, badly enunciated, and horribly edited narration that I didn't follow a lot of what he said.

Historia
Across the country women are being murdered by a killer who leaves no evidence, no fatal wounds, no signs of struggle, and no clues to a motive. They are, truly, perfect crimes. In fact, the only thing that links the victims is the man they all knew: Jack Reacher.

Disappointing
Revisado: 04-14-22
I can't discuss my main objection without a spoiler, so I won't. Bottom line: the killer's method of accomplishing the murders just doesn't work that way. And that was established in the literature long before this was written.
I hope the next book has a better Jack Reacher-- one who isn't always the smartest guy in the room, especially because everybody else is extremely stupid. This story was way too dependent on the tiniest of details and nuances that only Reacher figured out. And the FBI agents were way too stereotypical.

This was an extraordinary book to listen to in the days before and after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Characters were believable and dialogue was very well written. Plot development was excellent. Narration was very good.
The only downside, for me, was the very detailed description of weapons, ships, etc., especially toward the end. But if you have a military background and are interested in that kind of thing, you'll probably love it. I can't wait until my new credit's are available and I can start Book 2.

Historia
In the spring of 2016, as immigration debates rocked the United States, three men in a militia group known as the Crusaders grew aggravated over one Kansas town’s growing Somali community. They decided that complaining about their new neighbors and threatening them directly wasn’t enough. The men plotted to bomb a mosque, aiming to kill hundreds and inspire other attacks against Muslims in America. But they would wait until after the presidential election, so that their actions wouldn’t hurt Donald Trump’s chances of winning.

An excellent and compelling listen
Revisado: 12-25-21
I could barely put this book down. The characters were beautifully portrayed - I felt like Dan Day was someone I'd known for years. The author moved the story at a good pace - providing the kinds of details that made the book more interesting, without getting needlessly and boringly bogged down in minutiae. And Patrick Stein - haven't we all known someone like him? (If you haven't, trust me; those guys are out there.)
What detracted from the book, for me at least, was the narration. On the whole, it wasn't bad. But most of the place names in Western Kansas were mispronounced, and to a local, it was really irritating. Many of those who buy this book will be from Kansas, because we're horrified that something so reprehensible was coming together right under our noses and we had no idea. How much trouble is it to call a librarian, a Congressman's satellite office, a high school civics teacher, or even a local Chief of Police, and get information on how the names of cities and towns in the area are pronounced? The author, himself, obviously spent quite a bit of time in the area, and would have been an appropriate source for that information. This particular narrator isn't the only one, certainly, who has botched the names of places and companies in Audible recordings, and I really think Audible listeners deserve that little bit of effort that it takes to get it right. Some names - Salina, for instance - were not even consistent in how they were mispronounced. A few other words were consistently mispronounced, also.
If you're not from Kansas, the mistakes in pronunciation probably won't bother you, and you'll find the narration acceptable. But wherever the setting is, whether it's Kansas, Maine, Alaska, or outside the U.S., the narrator should at least go to the trouble of finding out how to correctly pronounce names. In this instance, it made me wish I was reading a hard copy of the book instead of listening to the Audible version.

Just too weird
Revisado: 11-02-21
I bailed about halfway through. if I wanted a fantasy-sci-fi (or whatever this is), I would have found one. I thought I was getting the usual kind of story from these authors, but I got something else. Life (and plot development) is so easy when you have supernatural powers, isn't it? Even if you're a believer, this story is a stretch too far for almost all believers.
