Historia
The American West in the early 1960s appears to be a pastoral paradise: golden wheat fields, mist-filled canyons, frolicking animals. Aspiring novelist Aaron Holland Broussard has observed it from the open door of a boxcar, riding the rails for both inspiration and odd jobs. Jumping off in Denver, he finds work on a farm and meets Joanne McDuffy, an articulate and fierce college student and gifted painter. Their soul connection is immediate, but their romance is complicated by Joanne’s involvement with a shady professor who is mixed up with a drug-addled cult.

Increasingly spiritual
Revisado: 09-10-21
Will Payton’s performance has become an integral part of my ability to continue to appreciate the increasingly spiritual writing of JLB. There were times when I thought I was reading Stephen King but there was enough familiar to keep me going forward.
In my mid-70’s, I would prefer to die before either JLB or Will Patton. Outliving either one is an experience I’d rather not have.

Historia
Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, a father, a neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

Historia
Almost 2.5 million Americans have served in Afghanistan or Iraq since September 11, 2001. C.J. Chivers has reported from both fronts from the beginning, walking side by side with combatants for more than a dozen years. He describes the experience of war today as it is endured by those most at risk - the camaraderie and profound sense of purpose, alongside courage, frustration, and moral confusion mixed with technical precision. In these remote places where the reason for their presence is sometimes not clear, these young men kill or are killed, facing palpable and often constant threat of ambush or hidden bombs....

Close up of American soldiers in Afghanistan
Revisado: 09-01-18
Interesting but painful look at the experience of our soldiers in a seemingly endless war. Unbearably vivid at times to read how our soldiers paid for the mistakes of those in power.

Tedious, confusing, irritating
Revisado: 05-05-18
This narrator has a screechy voice and lacks any ability to differentiate between characters. Listening to her is an assault on the eardrums. I was not able to finish the book. I will be requesting a refund.

Scattered story line. With the exception of the recurring characters, no one was well delienated or particularly worth knowing. Too bad because other books were much better. This one seemed dashed off. Maybe someone else should take the helm.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Somewhat Difficult
Revisado: 11-25-17
Full appreciation requires more scientific background than I have. However, the main character Jas is so likeable and just plain fun, that I never considered bailing. It was intriguing to consider a off-earth colony and the sorts of people it would attract.

How the spirit of a young person can survive the horror of abuse by a parent. Insane ravings went on far, far too long so it was a relief when the father was out of the story line for extended periods of time. Turtle herself was a unique creation and fascinating company.
