While getting into his car on the evening of February 16, 1978, the chief of the CIA's Moscow station was handed an envelope by an unknown Russian. Its contents stunned the Americans: details of top-secret Soviet research and development in military technology that was totally unknown to the United States.

Historia
An unprecedented high-level master narrative of America's intelligence wars from the only person ever to helm both the CIA and NSA, at a time of heinous new threats and wrenching change. For General Michael Hayden, playing to the edge means playing so close to the line that you get chalk dust on your cleats. Otherwise, by playing back, you may protect yourself, but you will be less successful in protecting America.

Authoritative account
Revisado: 09-14-21
This was an impressive work. I could see some perhaps put off by the depth of the details. One has to have a real interest and fascination with the intelligence community to fully appreciate this book.. But the totality of Hayden's experiences and insights and the fact that he personally narrates this work really adds to its value. I had the benefit of hearing Hayden speak in person, so I knew a little bit of what I was in for when purchasing this audio book. I wasn't disappointed. For me, it was a great read that was enhanced by the author's personal reading.

Historia
A powerful memoir from the late former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. With the same directness that defined his career in public service, Rumsfeld's memoir is filled with previously undisclosed details and insights about the Bush administration, 9/11, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It also features Rumsfeld's unique and often surprising observations on eight decades of history. Both a fascinating narrative and an unprecedented glimpse into history, Known and Unknown captures the legacy of one of the most influential men in public service.

A remarkable story of public service
Revisado: 09-14-21
I didn't know what to expect when first starting this book, but I was intrigued by the many positions of great influenced held by Rumsfield over the course of his public service (and also corporate) career. I wasn't disappointed. Rumsfeld had a front row seat to some very historical figures and events and this book is a fine recounting of many of them. As you'll see, Rumsfield narrates his own book and for a biography, that really adds a nice touch. You do feel as though you are sitting down and chatting (albeit a one way chat) with the subject of the book. For the most part, it was a very interesting read and I enjoyed Rumsfield's candid observations. I thought he was very self-reflective and in places admitted where he might have done things differently to do them over again, A worthwhile read which I very much enjoyed. Whether you like Rumsfield or not, it's hard to deny his commitment to public service and many sacrifices made.

Great Story, OK Narration
Revisado: 09-14-21
This was an interesting story with good character development. The more the story played out, the more I got into it and its characters. You'll read much criticism of the narrator. She wasn't terrific and some of her accents were overdone to be sure. But as the reading progressed, that didn't bother me a whole lot and I enjoyed the story. Onward to the next book in the series.

Historia
When Admiral William Halsey selected Destroyer Squadron 21 to lead his victorious ships into Tokyo Bay to accept the Japanese surrender, it was the most battle-hardened US naval squadron of the war. But it was not the squadron of ships that had accumulated such an inspiring résumé; it was the people serving aboard them. Through diaries, personal interviews with survivors, and letters written to and by the crews during the war, preeminent historian of the Pacific theater John Wukovits brings to life the human story of the squadron and its men.

Historia
Called a great book worthy of a great man, this definitive biography of the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet in World War II is considered the best book ever written about Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. Highly respected by both the civilian and naval communities, Nimitz was sometimes overshadowed by more colorful warriors in the Pacific such as MacArthur and Halsey. Potter's lively and authoritative style fleshes out Admiral Nimitz's personality to help listeners appreciate the contributions he made as the principle architect of Japan's defeat.

Historia
No radio distress call ever crackled from the submarine USS Grunion. In 1942, under the fog of World War II, the vessel simply vanished without a trace. For nearly sixty-five years, only a dead silence lingered regarding the fate of the sub and its seventy-man crew—until now. Here author Peter F. Stevens reveals the incredible true story of the search for and discovery of the Grunion—as well as the navy’s shocking and willful cover-up of the submarine’s baffling disappearance.

Revisado: 07-17-21
An inspiring story about service to one’s country (the men of the USS Grunion) but also about what binds fathers and sons and of a family who were dedicated to keep the memory alive of a long lost but never forgotten family member. It was beautifully told and also kept ones interest throughout. Also expertly narrated. Well recommend.

Historia
Only four men in American history have been promoted to the five-star rank of Admiral of the Fleet: William Leahy, Ernest King, Chester Nimitz, and William Halsey. These four men were the best and the brightest the navy produced, and together they led the U.S. Navy to victory in World War II, establishing the United States as the world's greatest fleet. In The Admirals, award-winning historian Walter R. Borneman tells their story in full detail for the first time.

An awesome story about incredible leaders
Revisado: 07-17-21
An inspiring story about some historic leaders from WW II. I give the author credit in that he covers the good and the bad, the strengths a d the weaknesses. And most importantly, due credit is given to the brave men and woken who these admirals led. For without them, the contributions of these admirals could would not have happened. Finally, my complements to the narrator who brought it all to life in elegant and very listenable fashion. Well done and well worth the audio read.

An incredible story, about an incredible mission featuring real life hero’s. At times the book was painful to read, but only because the author so powerfully relayed the incredible suffering these brave heroes endured. It was a memorable read and I was left with enduring appreciation for the servicemen and women of the time who served this country with honor. A fantastic book!
