This is a much needed book. The author reveals that many of of the “truths” regarding climate change lack empirical support. I must complain though about her Scottish accent. It’s unacceptable to call her dialect English. So I gave up midway through the book!

I disliked that several characters had similar names, Don Achilles, Alfonso, Antonio, Rino, Nino, Gino. A bit disorienting.

A story full of surprises about the two friends Elena and Lila, their lifelong conflict prone friendship, their children , lovers and husbands, several generations of relatives and friends who populate the lives of these two friends, Napoli, men, mafiosi, helpfulness, death, 60 years of life filling this book. It is beautifully narrated by Anna Bonaiuto!

The book commences with the health aspects of transitioning—mostly male to female. It continues to depict the inherent contradictions between the desire to live according to one’s gender identity and one’s biological sex (gender assigned at birth). It shines a light on the conflicts resulting from MtF persons insistence to intrude into women’s spaces (bathrooms, showers, salons) irrespective of the state of their transition. For example when MtFs insist on showering with women while still having a penis. The absurdity of allowing males into female sports is well described. The second part of the book though drifts into a lot of legal cases in Canada, the US, Canada, and Australia, the details of which are less interesting, as I live in a Northern European country. The lessons I take away from the book made it still worthwhile.

A masterfully told story of Black and White racial hate and resentment. In typical Oates’ fashion, the author defines neither clear victims nor clear perpetrators, leaves ambiguity in every important scene. I found the different versions the story deeply fascinating. The performance was stellar, one of these occasions when an audiobook turns into its own art form.
Thank you!

This book is deeply touching, humane, and philosophical all at once. There are so many levels to each chapter that I resolved to listen to it twice. Some background literature helped to understand the Cain and Abel allegory, and to admire Samuel Hamilton’s graciousness and depth. Lee, a Chinese, is the philosopher in the book, his dignity and antidote to our present day’s mistrust of China.

What a predictable story! It has all the features of a kitsch novel. The good but dirt poor Bess is reunited with her lost daughter, whereas the fake mother, rich but emotionally underdeveloped, looses the daughter which was really never hers. The two women work out a visiting schedule, both find new love and everybody is happy ever after. Contrived. As a non British listener, I found the Cockney parts of this audiobook difficult to understand.

Leir Giles does away with well-worn arguments from «useful idiots» supporting Russia imperialism. He also shows Russia’s willingness to do harm to other countries by any means. Russia apologists should read this book, including the Chinese.

Snyder is obviously used to teach college students, but this book is like listening to a bad lecture. The ideas are certainly excellent, but the repetitions and references to other places in the book destroy them.

This is a true crime story about the criminal injustice system in a small town. Two innocent men, one of them severely mentally ill were framed by the police and ended up with death sentences. They endured years of abuse by prison wardens on death row. Ron Williamson, suffering of manic depressive disorder and paranoia, never got the treatment he needed. As a Norwegian, I am shocked about the American police’s methods. Grisham does an excellent job in telling this story and one feels his compassion with the poor and neglected. Craig Wasson is amazing, a good performance is essential for an audiobook—and he delivers beautifully.
