Wow, what a powerful story! It is mind boggling what Tara Westover has been able to achieve. I haven’t seen or read any of the interviews with her, but I intend to go find them. Something about Julia Whelan’s performance jars me. Maybe it’s because I disliked The Great Alone, By Kristin Hannah, also featuring a tyrannical father, and her voicing of these two fathers, and one son in this story. Maybe she does her job so well I can’t get past these abusive men. I could not wait for Tara to escape these men, so I wouldn’t have to listen to their voices. Still, her story is inspiring.

Sad story, but well written and performed. Have not read/listened to her other books, but will probably try the “Little Fires” one now based on the writing.

Like A Gentleman in Moscow, this book is beautifully written. The language is just delicious! It perfectly captures the time and place. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thoroughly enjoyed this scholarly novel. Recommended because I once read “People if the Book” by Geraldine Brooks. This is similar. Loved how it pieced together the events by going back and forth between the 17th century and 2001. Beautifully written and performed.
Highly recommend

This was highly recommended and it did not disappoint. I only knew Alan Cumming from his masterpiece theater intros but this sounded like a compelling story. And it was. Well written and told. So interesting.

I’ve read or listened to all of Kate Morton’s books. Love her stories. This was a great story, but the ending was disappointing. Too many loose ends unresolved. The performance by Joanne Froggett was superb. If you’re a Downton Abbey fan you’ll enjoy her amazing command of accents.

Enjoyed the plot twists and devices of this one, and I’ve read/listened to a lot of WWII books. The author did her research well, so it feels authentic. Loved the Julie narrator, the Maddie one less so. Loved the 2 parts, with their perspectives of the events. Aimed at “young adults” I believe, but I am far from that, and enjoyed it immensely.

Loved this book and look forward to discovering Mr Towles’ other works. Marvelous characters and plot, and brilliantly captured setting, both time and place. One of those books you are sad to finish. Narration was excellent.

Although this passed the time, I was disappointed with the level of language. The descriptions were repetitive and over reaching. How many times did she talk about duct tape or fireweed?
The combination of PTSD, alcoholism, spousal abuse, and homesteading in Alaska was certainly powerful, and deserving of focus, but I enjoyed The Nightingale so much more.

I’ve read most of PD James’ books, so obviously a fan already. These short stories were perfect to listen to at Christmas. I was glad of something “new”, although they were written decades ago, from the master of mystery writing. Also, enjoyed Jenny Agutter’s performance, having been a fan of hers since I first saw her in The Railway Children.
