I love adventures with world building and while not a whole lot in this book, it does describe a place completely foreign to my imagination—enough to be satisfying.

Todd Menesses was the perfect voice to tell this story in the audiobook.

In today’s world, humans have yet to travel past the Earth’s moon, yet with talk of crewed missions going to Mars in the near future, it isn’t a stretch to start thinking of also exploring the moons of Jupiter.

In this book, the possibility of life on another planet is seen as a threat to the religious purists who hold large political sway. Coupled with the struggle to escape from under a smothering cruel dictator, the stage is set for the adventure to the Jupiter system in search of extraterrestrial life and minerals to mine.

The characters are fraught with real world problems and desires. The main character is a biologist and has a charming habit of seeing other people he meets as particular birds he has encountered in his work. (I absolutely love this).

The lack of misogyny is refreshing for a SF book, although there is an egotistical rival that ads tension to the story.

Hopefully a sequel will be forthcoming!
