Historia
In Drug Use for Grown-Ups, he draws on decades of research and his own personal experience to argue definitively that the criminalization and demonization of drug use - not drugs themselves - have been a tremendous scourge on America, not least in reinforcing this country's enduring structural racism. Dr. Hart did not always have this view. He came of age in one of Miami's most troubled neighborhoods at a time when many ills were being laid at the door of crack cocaine. His initial work as a researcher was aimed at proving that drug use caused bad outcomes.

Psychiatrist heartily endorses this book
Revisado: 01-25-21
I’m a psychiatrist with ten years experience treating people with substance use issues. I’ve spent seven of those years awaiting Dr. Hart’s followup to High Price. Drug Use For Grownups is a worthy followup. Both books inform the reader about the ruinous consequences of US drug policy, and separate signal from noise in drug research, where Dr. Hart’s contributions cannot be overstated. In Drug Use For Grownups he takes the further step of examining his own recreational drug use, as a necessary step toward destigmatizing such activity, and sets the stage for a societal transformation to a far healthier, less hypocritical, less punitive, and not the least, more enjoyable approach to same. His reading of his book is a bit stilted, but this is a minor issue, and his sincerity and passion grew on me. This is an important book.

Historia
As a divided nation plunges into the deepest crisis in its history, Abraham Lincoln boards a train for Washington and his inauguration - an inauguration Southerners have vowed to prevent by any means necessary. Drawing on new research, this account reveals the president-elect as a work in progress, showing him on the verge of greatness, foiling an assassination attempt, and forging an unbreakable bond with the American people.

A book most worthy of its subject
Revisado: 05-30-20
Highly recommended for Lincoln scholars and regular civilians alike! A presidential speechwriter himself, a songwriter, a historian and archivist, Widmer explores Lincoln’s thirteen day journey to his 1861 inaugural in most agreeable depth, illuminating the American experience in its moment of greatest peril. I wish Lincoln’s journey had taken longer because I didn’t want the stories to end.

More than a joy ride
Revisado: 11-26-19
Soulful and perceptive, funny and sad, outrageous and accessible, Acid for the Children is a book worthy of its author. While Flea, legendary musician and performer, combines rock guy swagger with wry humility, Michael Balzary, autobiographer, explores the foundational events of his first 20 years. He ends cliffhanger style, and I am absolutely stoked for his next installment.

Narrator mispronunciations too distracting
Revisado: 11-13-18
This important book is worth it, but please get a new narrator, the mispronunciations are far too numerous and distracting.

Historia
If you've ever sought a job or hired someone, applied to college or guided your child into a good kindergarten, asked someone out on a date or been asked out, you've participated in a kind of market. Most of the study of economics deals with commodity markets, where the price of a good connects sellers and buyers. But what about other kinds of "goods," like a spot in the Yale freshman class or a position at Google?

Historia
Here, Nassir Ghaemi draws from the careers and personal plights of such notable leaders as Lincoln, Churchill, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., JFK, and others from the past two centuries to build an argument at once controversial and compelling: the very qualities that mark those with mood disorders—realism, empathy, resilience, and creativity—also make for the best leaders in times of crisis.

Outstanding book
Revisado: 07-10-18
Important book with much to offer anyone interested in the mental health of leaders. I assume Dr. Ghaemi is besieged with requests to write in this manner about leaders in 2018.
