Historia
In a violent near-future, Asa Elias Doyle and her companions encounter an alien life form so heinous and destructive, they exile themselves in the desert so as not to contaminate other humans. To resist the compulsion to infect others is mental agony, but to succumb is to relinquish humanity and free will. Desperate, they kidnap a doctor and his two daughters as they cross the wasteland--and endanger the world.

Amazing writing, loved the relationships and the way Butler convinces you to like unlikeable characters is always so impressive!

Historia
Told in two distinct and irresistible voices, Junauda Petrus' bold and lyrical debut is the story of two black girls from very different backgrounds finding love and happiness in a world that seems determined to deny them both. Junauda Petrus' debut brilliantly captures the distinctly lush and lyrical voices of Mabel and Audre as they conjure a love that is stronger than hatred, prison, and death and as vast as the blackness between the stars.

Really interesting read
Revisado: 01-28-21
This narration was beautifully done. I think the story was very unique. I’m not sold on the romance, but nevertheless enjoyed the journey this book took me on. The passing of time within this book was very believable. The queer trauma within the story was heavy, but didn’t make the story overwhelming sad. This story had hope and grief, love and joy, biological family and chosen family. Really incredible read now I’m sitting here just reflecting on the beauty of the story.

Between his first boyfriend, Landon, his varsity soccer practices, and his internship at his favorite tea shop, Darius is feeling pretty okay. Like he finally knows what it means to be Darius Kellner. Then, of course, everything changes.

Such a wholesome story!
Revisado: 12-20-20
This was such a perfect sequel to Darius the Great is Not Okay. The book picked up right where the last one left off and didn’t feel like just a bunch of rambly stuff to fill a book. The depiction of anxiety and depression is so spot on. I absolutely love Darius as a character because of how emotional he can get and just his honesty is inspiring. Also, I really enjoy the relationships (romantic, mentorship, platonic, familial, etc) that were explored and developed within this novel. Khorram writes incredible characters. I hope his future books also explore similar topics !

Historia
An extraordinary debut novel, Freshwater explores the surreal experience of having a fractured self. It centers around a young Nigerian woman, Ada, who develops separate selves within her as a result of being born "with one foot on the other side". Unsettling, heart-wrenching, dark, and powerful, Freshwater is a sharp evocation of a rare way of experiencing the world, one that illuminates how we all construct our identities. Ada begins her life in the south of Nigeria as a troubled baby and a source of deep concern to her family.

unlike anything I’ve ever read in the best way
Revisado: 06-27-20
I loved this book. The narration by Akwaeke really brought the book to life. I’m fascinated with the multiple god identities Ada (the protagonist) holds within her. I’m still in such awe of the writing. That one poetry chapter was incredible & I would love to read a poetry book by Akwaeke. I also liked how gender identities were explored within this novel. Akwaeke also discussed heavy topics in such an awful but awesome way if that makes sense. Definitely worth listening to and buying the physical book!

THIS WAS SOOOO NECESSARY!!
Revisado: 05-03-20
I loved the feeling of getting lost in his storytelling. It felt as if he was telling me these stories while we were on a road trip. It was so strange, yet really comforting to understand his stories from my own experiences. There were a number of times when I sat there like, “why is this me though!!” lol and I loved that! As a black genderqueer person I definitely feel so seen and represented in this piece of work & I’m looking forward to Johnson’s next book!!
