Historia
More is at stake in the music we listen to or perform than most people are aware. In this vivacious and challenging work, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski—a philosopher, theologian, composer, conductor, and singer—explains why the great classical music of Western civilization is morally and intellectually good for us, as well as why certain other forms of music can actually be harmful.

Suffers from stiff and uninformed narrator
Revisado: 07-21-23
The book is a wonderful addition to the discussion of beautiful and appropriate sacred music.
I will edit my remarks on its content as I finish reading (not listening) to this fine book. As for this audio version, I purchased it for someone who might struggle with reading.
Sadly, the narrator makes embarrassing mistakes (Paul VI he interprets as Paul the Eleventh) and who is off the mark with classic names like Richard Wagner and dozens of standard words that he pronounces poorly, showing a lack of basic literary experience.
Not a deal breaker, but uncomfortable at times for a book dedicated to beauty and Western Culture.

Western civilization has given us modern science, the wealth of free-market economics, the security of law, a sense of human rights and freedom, charity as a virtue, splendid art and music, philosophy grounded in reason, and innumerable other gifts we take for granted.

Incredible Content That is Rarely Taught
Revisado: 07-11-23
Although the narrator is not the most inviting, the content is sublime and well-researched. Naturally, the strong anti-Catholic sentiments that started in the Reformation and the ensuing Black Legend efforts are present in the reviews and comments. America, in paricular has always been and remains anit-Catholic and now anti-Western Civilization. The truth is evident, especially in contemporary accounts and not in the remarks of "modern scholars". While not perfect, because the Church has always been at the mercy of some unsavory clergy and laity, the overwhelming good that has resulted from the efforts of the Catholic Church and its pure and noble Cathecism will not be erased, even though the current state within and without the Church is precarious and under threat. Lies, equivocation and revisionism will continue, because so many want to tear down its good works and create a new world in their own image and ideology.

Historia
In his latest book, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski argues that ever since the new liturgical books following the Second Vatican Council came into force, Roman Catholic faithful have suffered the effects of a hasty and far-reaching reform permeated with nominalism, voluntarism, Protestantism, rationalism, antiquarianism, hyperpapalism, and other modern errors. Man is not master over divine liturgy, Dr. Kwasniewski emphasizes; rather, all of us are called to be stewards of the sacred, from the lowest-ranking layman to the pope himself.

Essential Reading for Catholics
Revisado: 12-20-22
This book is well-researched and well-written. It may have derailed the deterioration of traditional Catholic worship had it been written and received in 1970s.

Historia
In St. Augustine in 90 Minutes, Paul Strathern offers a concise, expert account of St. Augustine's life and ideas and explains their influence on man's struggle to understand his existence in the world. The book also includes selections from St. Augustine's work, a brief list of suggested readings for those who wish to delve deeper, and chronologies that place St. Augustine within his own age and in the broader scheme of philosophy.

Snarky Presentation
Revisado: 06-22-22
The impression that I received from the author is that he does not like St. Augustine or the Catholic Church and constantly take shots at the both. I'm sure it's the same for St. Thomas Aquinas, so I'll pass. The book should be subtitles "A Cynical and Sarcastic Review of St. Augustine in 90 Minutes".
Perhaps it is just his attempt at humor, but the impression left was not anything like the wit and humor of a G.K. Chesterton, who could be humorous, skeptical and critical, while maintaining a level of respect.

Historia
Written by G. K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy addresses foremost one main problem: How can we contrive to be at once astonished at the world and yet at home in it? Chesterton writes, "I wish to set forth my faith as particularly answering this double spiritual need, the need for that mixture of the familiar and the unfamiliar which Christendom has rightly named romance."

Enjoyed this third foray into. Chesterton. Passionate, humorous and intelligent in what he states and argues. Far more than most celebrated philosophers, theologians and apologists.

Historia
John Eliot Gardiner grew up passing one of the only two authentic portraits of Bach every morning and evening on the stairs of his parents’ house, where it hung for safety during World War II. He has been studying and performing Bach ever since, and is now regarded as one of the composer's greatest living interpreters. The fruits of this lifetime's immersion are distilled in this remarkable book, grounded in the most recent Bach scholarship but moving far beyond it.

Monumental Work on JS Bach
Revisado: 02-04-22
The content is superb. Perhaps too detailed and in depth for casual Bach lovers and even many professional musicians.
Gardiner displays his extensive, lifelong experience and understanding of JS Bach and many other facets of Western Music History. It's not surprising that his recordings are so illuminated and musical. He has studied countless details that only reinforce his skill at recreating great performance of JS Back, Monteverdi and many others.
The narration is clean, precise and well paced, but some unfortunate pronunciation errors. I imagine reviewing and preparing a work of this size, was not possible.
Slightly irritating to hear pharisee pronounced as fuhREEsee, among other Italian and German word errors, but overall, very good and an impressive effort.
Much easier to absorb the material aurally than visually, so thank you for this audio version.
