Brilliant! A story of a gallant woman
Revisado: 03-22-25
While listening to the end chapter and epilogue, I thought of ones obligation to share the history of how we remain free people, with liberty to live as we choose. Hundreds of thousands of individuals pledged their lives, individually and collectively to defend our freedom of our home country and the countries of many other people in the world during the world war two.
This book of the clandestine warfare of SOE agents and spies pants a rich narrative of one woman’s life who intentionally gave her all to preserve the British nation in the war years. Tears came into my eyes many times listening to this wonderful book.

Historia
On September 6, 1945, less than a month after the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, George Weller, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, became the first free Westerner to enter the devastated city. Going into the hospitals and consulting the doctors of the bomb's victims, Weller was the first to document its unprecedented long-range medical effects. He also became the first to enter the nearby Allied POW camps, which rivaled those of the Nazis for cruelty and bested them for death count.

John Plaster’s riveting account of his covert activities as a member of a special operations team during the Vietnam War is “a true insider’s account...this eye-opening report will leave readers feeling as if they’ve been given a hot scoop on a highly classified project” (Publishers Weekly). Code-named the Studies and Observations Group, SOG was the most secret elite US military unit to serve in the Vietnam War - so secret that its very existence was denied by the government.

Thorough and thoughtful presentation of the secret war surrounding Vietnam in the 50s 60s and 70s. Stories of valour courage and sacrifice. This history is unknown to most Americans and it should be on anyone’s reading list for an understanding of the Vietnam war. I highly recommended it.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Stunning computation of expertise nuclear scientist, International policy expertise, political leaders of numerous countries, earth scientist and military minds from every continent on earth today. The book is so thoroughly sourced that there’s no argument about the outcome of a nuclear exchange. It’s not how, it’s when… listen to the book we’re all afraid to pick up. it would make a great documentary but I’m sure no one would produce it.

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

Bringing history to life is a rare talent. As it dyslexic person I’m grateful to be able to listen to the excellent reading of the various characters. The reader uses different intonation’s to represent the varied peoples of the book, including singing songs which I found particular enjoyment. The interwoven stories of the different characters in the helping me stay with the story by bringing them life. The weaving of actual historical events and back stories available a generation after the war helps me broaden my knowledge as an American born two years after the war. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.

Historia
When Hitler’s armies occupied Italy in 1943, they also seized control of mankind’s greatest cultural treasures. As they had done throughout Europe, the Nazis could now plunder the masterpieces of the Renaissance, the treasures of the Vatican, and the antiquities of the Roman Empire. On the eve of the Allied invasion, General Dwight Eisenhower empowered a new kind of soldier to protect these historic riches. In May 1944 two unlikely American heroes—artist Deane Keller and scholar Fred Hartt—embarked from Naples on the treasure hunt of a lifetime, tracking billions of dollars of missing art, including works by Michelangelo, Donatello, Titian, Caravaggio, and Botticelli.

I travel to Europe five times in my lifetime; visiting the major museums in Europe, the Mediterranean and Great Britain and Russia. Four of these trips lasted more than a month, and one an entire year. This book, I am delighted to say, open my eyes to what I wasn’t seeing when I was studying the masters.
Now I’ll have to listen again with note paper in hand to reference the artist’s, their works and numerous locales from which they were rescued from the ravages of the Second World War. I love heroes now I have many more. I think these are my favorites!

Unknown Untold Unblinking History
Revisado: 09-20-23
To say Col Wheeler’s assembled dispatches from the Pacific Theater of War is worth your time listening, is a disservice of the highest order to his dedication to get at the truth, and to honor the men and women of the alliance against Japan’s aggression.
I think this is the most important book I have read as a lifelong seventy-six year old student of history. To date I thought my palate complete. I know now that to be fool’s gold.
I’m very grateful for all who rescued and assembled these dispatches from a newspaperman’s newspaperman. Tip of my hat in humble respect.

Historia
In late 1944, as a precursor to the invasion of the Philippines, U.S. military analysts decided to seize the small island of Peleliu to ensure that the Japanese airfield there could not threaten the invasion forces. This important new book explores the dramatic story of this ‘forgotten’ battle and the campaign’s strategic failings. Bitter Peleliu reveals how U.S. intelligence officers failed to detect the complex network of caves, tunnels, and pillboxes hidden inside the island’s coral ridges.

Highest percentage, of casualties of the Pacific War
Revisado: 06-27-23
The incredible and detailed story of what happened and the resulting lack of subsequent lessons learned, dramatically increased losses at Iwo Jima & Okinawa. The Marine Corps general planning staff’s refused or neglected at best, to communicate the change in strategy of massive banzai charges to defensive tunnels, gun emplacement’s, and precision targeting of beach landing areas, is part of the untold story of the South Pacific in WWII. For war historians, and the cause of peace, this book is a vital record that needs to be known by all. The epilogue is particularly moving.
