Historia
In late 2017, scientists at a Hawaiian observatory glimpsed an object soaring through our inner solar system, moving so quickly that it could only have come from another star. Avi Loeb, Harvard’s top astronomer, showed it was not an asteroid; it was moving too fast along a strange orbit, and left no trail of gas or debris in its wake. There was only one conceivable explanation: the object was a piece of advanced technology created by a distant alien civilization.

More general overview than providing any depth
Revisado: 02-13-25
The general subject is catnip for me but I found some of it to be distracting from its message. Much of the opening feels like a person screaming from the rooftop that they're credible rather than just making an argument.

Great message but writing didn't maintain the right level
Revisado: 02-06-25
I found the overarching message of the book to be well presented and interesting. But the writing to me bobbed between overarching claims to extremely minute operational and battle details that sometimes felt disconnected from the wider point being made.

What is life? This is among the most difficult open problems in science, right up there with the nature of consciousness and the existence of matter. All the definitions we have fall short. None help us understand how life originates or the full range of possibilities for what life on other planets might look like. In Life as No One Knows It, physicist and astrobiologist Sara Imari Walker argues that solving the origin of life requires radical new thinking and an experimentally testable theory for what life is.

Lots of provocative and interesting examples to engage with. Doesn't all come together maybe but not sure that's realistic.

Historia
For as long as we have looked to the skies, the question of whether life on earth is the only life to exist has been at the core of the human experience, driving scientific debate and discovery, shaping spiritual belief, and prompting existential thought across borders and generations. It’s one of our culture’s favorite conversations, and yet, the idea of extraterrestrial intelligence has been largely banished to the realm of fantasy and conspiracy. Now, for the first time, the full story of our national obsession with UFOs is told.

Highly worthwhile and different from movie
Revisado: 10-01-24
I suspect like many I had only seen the movie. Quite liking that and finding it both entertaining and smart commentary the book delivered on both fronts as well. It’s very different. About no macho good guy. More Minority Reporty sci-fi police state vibe than action.

Historia
A successful Wall Street trader turned Cambridge neuroscientist reveals the biology of boom and bust and how risk taking transforms our body chemistry, driving us to extremes of euphoria and risky behavior or stress and depression. The laws of financial boom and bust, it turns out, have more than a little to do with male hormones. In a series of groundbreaking experiments, Dr. John Coates identified a feedback loop between testosterone and success that dramatically lowers the fear of risk.

Well above average popular science book
Revisado: 09-27-24
Most in this genre kind of have one point with highly repetitive examples. This didn’t. It explored lots of angles of its inquiries with great anecdotes to help understanding. I also appreciated that it didn’t end like some other similar books with sort of shallow public policy suggestions.

Historia
In 1981, Jack Welch took over General Electric and quickly rose to fame as the first celebrity CEO. He golfed with presidents, mingled with movie stars, and was idolized for growing GE into the most valuable company in the world. But Welch’s achievements didn’t stem from some greater intelligence or business prowess. Rather, they were the result of a sustained effort to push GE’s stock price ever higher, often at the expense of workers, consumers, and innovation.

Revisado: 04-30-24
The first half was much stronger and tighter as a pointed biography. It lost its way a bit more trying to make more sweeping commentary which felt unearned.
