Historia
Detective Constable Angus MacVicar has just landed his dream job – transferred out of uniform and assigned to Oldcastle’s biggest ongoing murder investigation: Operation Telegram, hunting the “Fortnight Killer”. Every two weeks another couple is targeted. One victim is left at the scene, their corpse used as a twisted message board. The second body is never seen again. This should be the perfect chance for Angus to prove himself, but instead of working on the investigation’s front line, he’s lumbered with the forensic psychologist from hell.

Why such wordy useless narrative?
Revisado: 11-04-24
I have become a committed fan of Stuart MacBride and his characters as well as the performances by Angus King, but this book is testing my patience. There is so much unnecessary description. It reminds me of writing essays as a young student when meeting a word requirement was part of the assignment. After saying it’s a dismal night at the bus stop- unless it’s going to move the plot along- get on with it. After the 3rd time explaining how the doorbell video is listed in the clip inventory- just say next video…It’s infuriating. It’s as though an entirely different writer is responsible for this book.

This Author Has Potential
Revisado: 02-03-24
I'm now listening to Book 4 in the DI Rob Marshall series after starting with .5 False Start. I probably wouldn't have continued, but as I listen to books the narrator is equally as important to me and Angus King is very good at what he does. That being said...the production value on these books is not as meticulous as other series that King has voiced. There has been more than one editing goof...where 2 takes were included one after another of the same sentence...just messy, lazy editing.
The stories have all the makings of a Grimm or a Logan...but the clarity is missing. It's almost feels like James is auditioning ideas for characters in front of his audience, but what that means is that as the reader/listener it's difficult to build our own relationships with the characters. Elliot/Andy/Andrea is so over the top in her obnoxious traits that it's difficult to believe she's a grown up let alone an experienced police detective. Marshall is the only clearly defined character, but even he has moments of identity crisis. Focus on the relationships we care about...Marshall and Kirsten...Jenn, Thia...even Rakesh who has now been shipped off to professional standards was a more fully developed character albeit not consistent. Elliot could be someone we care about, but right now she's a caricature.
I want to keep following this series, but some polishing needs to happen in order for me to stick with it. Just pushing out content is fine as the genre has people hungry for more...but for the longevity of a character we have to be able to relate...that's why Harry Grimm and Jack Logan are as successful as they are...we feel we know them and that's because they seem real and relatable.

Please someone direct this narrator
Revisado: 07-03-23
I would love to stick with this author, because in these first few chapters I’ve really taken to the stories and the characters, but I listen in my car- so the narrator is equally important. This narrator has one tone…although occasionally he speaks in character and some life comes to the story. I kept hoping it would change, but I can’t bear it any longer and won’t be finishing this book.

From chapter one I knew who did it…and I haven’t even finished it but that’s how certain I am. A shame…because in these 2 books I’ve grown fond of the characters. Also- Joseph Tweedale started out a bit bland in Book 1, but I’m really enjoying him now.

The best yarn, and the best narrator
Revisado: 04-24-23
I've just completed the 2nd book in the Harry Grimm series (Best Served Cold) and have already downloaded the 3rd. The books by David J. Gatward satisfy my desire to escape into another world on every level. The mystery itself, the contradiction that is Harry Grimm..and best of all the background of Wensleydale and the surrounding area. Add to this that they have found maybe one of the best narrators I've ever listened to in Aubrey Parsons...It makes me want to savor each book because when I do get to the end of what is currently published I will be devastated. Aubrey captures each and every character so brilliantly that as soon as he starts a sentence it is absolutely clear which character is speaking. People say "I can't recommend it enough" all the time, but I seriously can not.

Historia
Doyle was back at Scotland Yard after taking maternity leave, and the powers-that-be had decided they’d ease her way by assigning her to assist DS Isabella Munoz, which was a fate only slightly worse than death. Annoying, it was, that she had to answer to Munoz; not to mention that Munoz wasn’t given many high-quality homicide assignments in the first place.

Historia
Aimée Leduc is happy her long-time business partner René has found a girlfriend. Really, she is. It’s not her fault if she can’t suppress her doubts about the relationship; René is moving way too fast, and Aimée’s instincts tell her Meizi, this supposed love of René’s life, isn’t trustworthy. And her misgivings may not be far off the mark: Meizi disappears during a Chinatown dinner to take a phone call and never comes back to the restaurant. Minutes later, the body of a young man, a science prodigy and volunteer at the nearby Musée, is found shrink-wrapped in an alleyway....

Please re-record this book.
Revisado: 07-18-18
After listening to 11 Aimee Leduc mysteries by Cara Black I finally got used to the nasally and bubble gum voice of Corine Monbertrand. I even started to enjoy her characterisation of René Freant. Then I purchased the 12th book from Audible and I miss Ms. Monterbertrand more than I could have imagined. Rebecca Gibel does have a smoky quality to her voice and inflections are good, but she should stick to books that take place in middle America. Her accent wouldn’t be so annoying if only her French pronunciation were at least close. The moment she says any French word the listener is ripped by force out of Paris and plopped down in Wisconsin. It is unbearable. I will be reading this one on Kindle and hope that the narrator for the next is better...until we finally get back to Ms. Montbertrand. What were they thinking? Are budgets that low?
