I can't finish this book. it's not going to happen. Female lead pretends to be someone she's not to get ahead in her career. this is only in the first couple of chapters. i can't see past the sociopath. I feel sorry for the guy that's too hung up on her body to see past it either.
I really wanted to love it but I guess I need the Kindle version because not having the ability to skip forward in search of something redeeming is working against this book.
There's a real good flow in the narrative. The banter between the male lead and the female lead is easy and humorous in the beginning but that changes very quickly.
When it comes to books where a romance is supposed to bloom, I can't see how manipulation and deceit become means to any (positive) end.
I even picked this book up because I thought the female lead was 27. She's actually 22. She's not a lawyer, she's a pre law undergrad. she doesn't have red hair and green eyes, she's got blonde hair and blue eyes. (🙄)
So, basically, it's another damn young adult read.
If you're a someone that got where you are without needing manipulate anybody. Shout out to you. You're gonna hate this book.
Once I start to side with the brooding male character, you've lost me.
This book lost me.
Closing Rant: Would it have been so impossible to write a story with a female lead that's: actually the same age as the male lead? That's single and not recently divorced? That doesn't have kids? That isn't suffering from some sort trauma?
message for the author:
failure of consideration
(n.) not delivering goods or services when promised in a contract.

I really wanted to love this but I was constantly waiting for Omar's plotline to pick up. I just didn't care at all for the lady's story. I understand that there's no narrator and so you need the two storylines that would at some point converge but I am not a fan of the girl's own background story. It just felt unimportant to me, it didn't hold my attention. I would almost definitely prefer a narrator rather than flashbacks in the machine.
This book took me a long time to finish. I think I prefer the cutscene movies on YouTube.

one of my favorite stories narrated beautifully. Part fantasy, part romance, this is all I ask for in a love story.

I got this audiobook to actually finish the book while I go about my day to day tasks but every time I start to listen I get lost in the narrator's tone and choice of inflection. 3/4 of the time spent listening is spent by me trying to remember how old the main character is. Is she supposed to be 9, 14, or 20? At that point I hate the person I should probably be rooting for.
I guess I'll have to finish this book the old fashioned way. hopefully by the time I start reading I won't be hearing this narrator's voice.
I don't recommend this audiobook. While the narrator's diction is clear, it is surprisingly annoying. How annoying? Annoying enough for me to write this review after listening to what amounts to about two and a half pages.
at the very least download the sample first. I didn't, I regretted it.

This book needed two narrators, one male, one female, both need to do a better job with accents than this narrator did. that said, she's not the worst I've heard.
-spoilers-
This book was pretty okay right up until the jerk she's dating starts tearing up her passport, then her cash, then cuts up her ID, the cuts up her credit cards, then either takes or destroys her phone and shoves her outside to fend for herself. Now I know sometimes you kind of get stuck in the headlights but at no time does she form a plan to walk until she finds a phone. She plays out all the worst case scenarios and I thing there's some redemption in the chica. Of course I was wrong! She goes down to the beach, not to get a rock to smash the windows of the condo where her jerk ex kicked her out of so she can get her belongings back, but so she can sleep until morning. I'm pretty sure she knows about high tide, bugs, nocturnal animals and everything though. 🙄
so there she is on the beach crying and two strangers walk up to her and she, literally, behaves like a small child would. She has no ID, no money, no change of clothes, and I'm hoping the first thing out of her mouth is "Can you please let me use your phone? I need to call the police." it wasn't. 😒
So then she's given these options; one guy says he'll get her into a cab and he'll pay for a night at a hotel so in the morning she can sort herself out, the other guy insists she come back with them to their condo so she's not alone. She literally goes from being at risk of being kidnapped to volunteering to be kidnapped.
It is at this point that I suspend all hopes in this. Choe's instincts as an orphan are crap. If you're out there folks, living that fantasy life, remember, always have a backup plan. Don't be like Chloe. Real life is not as kind.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I surpassed my expectations. It's not a new premise but it's exceptionally well written and preformed. I feared that Anderson was going to take a page or two from Tamora Pierce's work especially beginning with fraternal twins but she made it her own. very nice young adult read.
and I won't lie, if there ever is an older adult version of this story like this I'll pre-order it too.

if you rolled your eyes or sigh in exasperation after I mention this word "Twilight" you're going to love this book. if you didn't, you're going to love this book. If you've ever wondered what happened to the ugly vampires you're going to love this book.

This was an okay listen. I think it would be better read. at times it seemed to drone on a bit and I found myself slipping through a lot of the story building and I'm not sure if it was because of the narrator or the lack of dialogue. This is the first contemporary audio book by this author and I'm not sure I would try another.
I think I enjoyed the book much more.

I was too angry to finish this book.
Spoilers ahead.
I would rather be beaten to death rather than be forced to have sex, and then carry that child? Not I.
and so to have this young girl not fight when she had the chance to, to not run away when she wasn't restrained, to sit there and wait for her boss at her workstation to be raped filled me with such rage. I've read books with sensitive scenes before but, shit, never has the female prota- just accept such a dark fate.
No reasoning was enough. it wasn't an unfair fight, she just sat there and waited, knew what was about to happen and accepted it!
The narrator was seemingly nonchalant. Also, for this older woman to read the book was perhaps not the best call. It was odd to capture all of the inflections needed to make her sound like a 15-20 year old girl.
didn't finish.
book needs a sensitivity warning.
