Historia
In a small town, everyone thinks they know you: Charlie is a hardcore rocker who’s not as tough as he looks. Hammer is a footy jock with big AFL dreams and an even bigger ego. Zeke is a shy over-achiever, never macho enough for his family. But all three boys hide who they really are. When the truth is revealed, will it set them free or blow them apart?

Beautifully written, well crafted story that captures perfectly the pain of growing up a lie, then finding and embracing truth. Well done

Historia
Greenville County, South Carolina, is a wild, lush place that is home to the Boatwright family - a tight-knit clan of rough-hewn, hard- drinking men who shoot up each other's trucks, and indomitable women who get married young and age too quickly. At the heart of this story is Ruth Anne Boatwright, known simply as Bone, a bastard child who observes the world around her with a mercilessly keen perspective.

A truly important work
Revisado: 12-03-24
This is without a doubt one of the most impactful books I have ever read. I've never read anything quite like it. The hero, the victim, the villain and the nuance, illustrated with absolute mastery. Not just because it spoke to me personally but also because it has the power to speak to those who are fortunate enough to know nothing of the world this child lives in.

Historia
Originally published in 1953, Go Tell It on the Mountain was James Baldwin's first major work, based in part on his own childhood in Harlem. With lyrical precision, psychological directness, resonating symbolic power, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate, Baldwin chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy's discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a Pentecostal storefront church in Harlem.

The style, the language, the perfect narration, but above all the story. The subtlety of the story within the the story places Baldwin in class with Hemingway.

Historia
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

A sober prediction of our extinction
Revisado: 04-16-24
A minute by minute account of a very realistic possible string of events that would end the lives of almost every living creature in a couple of hours. Very well researched and with those facts (more than a few I did not previously know) presented in a horrifyingly plausible string of events which tumble towards absolute catastrophe.
Possibly the most terrifying book I've ever read.

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

The narrator made a noble effort
Revisado: 12-05-23
I avoided this tome since it was assigned in high school, and hoping that the deep appreciation I've gained for literature as a middle aged man would reveal its true value, I decided to give it a try. But my takeaway is that I want the 22 odd hours of my life back.
How this book was ever lauded as "the great American novel" utterly escapes me. The narrator did a heroic job bringing it to life but ultimately the words written by the author and ignored by the editor (if there ever was one), damned it to being what I can only describe as a pathetic attempt to channel Shakespeare.
It is utterly insufferable. It's the third book I've read by Melville and far and away the worst. It is ponderous that the author of Billy Budd, a comparatively succinct and artful masterclass on Real Politik, could have produced such tripe.

Spoiler in the introduction
Revisado: 09-07-23
The introduction of the book seems more like an afterword, and for first time readers it should be saved for the end.
That said, beautiful story of love interrupted by the puritanical nature of our society. I'm grateful to Vidal for writing it and inspired by his courage. Though it was published 75 years ago, it will surely strike a chord with young gay men in certain parts of the US and the world even today.

Historia
In his great triptych The Millennium, Bosch used oranges and other fruits to symbolize the delights of Paradise. Whence Henry Miller's title for this, one of his most appealing books; first published in 1957, it tells the story of Miller's life on the Big Sur, a section of the California coast where he lived for 15 years. Big Sur is the portrait of a place - one of the most colorful in the United States - and of the extraordinary people Miller knew there.

I wanted to like this and the story was a lot of fun but by part 3, it was just tired. Lists upon lists upon lists to no discernible meaning. Whining about a bad houseguest. The only thing worse than a bad houseguest is hearing someone else whine about theirs.

To describe this book would do it a great disservice as there have been other attempts to document psychotherapy. But this, and certainly as a coda to the first book, is in my opinion without peer.
