Historia
History is made and defined by landmark events-moments that irrevocably changed the course of human civilization. They have given us: spiritual and political ideas; catastrophic battles and wars; scientific and technological advances; world leaders both influential and monstrous; and cultural works of unparalleled beauty.

Fun course but Professor Fears is not for everyone

Only for Americans
Revisado: 02-28-23
I guess if you're a patriotic American you would enjoy this course, but since I'm not I found myself skipping many lectures and eventually the whole course. The lecturer, I don't think, even tries to make this course appealing to non-Americans as he keeps referring to 'us', 'we' and 'our' when referring to anything US. Maybe he doesn't realise the rest of the world can also listen to his course.....

Historia
Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of 13 dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on a journey ‘there and back again’. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon....

Andy Serkis is perfection itself
Revisado: 02-24-23
Like many others I am very much acquainted with the story of The Hobbit, I bought the audio book after seeing the positive reviews of Serkis' narration and oh my word, these reviews did not exaggerate. I have never heard better narration and I have listened to many many audio books. Each character is portrayed to perfection. Words cannot do justice to how amazing this narration is. I look forward to listening to the 3 Lord of the Rings books which Serkis luckily also narrates.

Historia
Misery Chastain was dead. Paul Sheldon had just killed her - with relief, with joy. Misery had made him rich; she was the heroine of a string of best sellers. And now he wanted to get on to some real writing. That's when the car accident happened, and he woke up in pain in a strange bed. But it wasn't the hospital. Annie Wilkes had pulled him from the wreck, brought him to her remote mountain home, splinted and set his mangled legs. The good news was that Annie was a nurse and had painkilling drugs. The bad news was that she was Paul's Number One Fan.

Historia
It was to be the war to end all wars, and it began at 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo. It would officially end nearly five years later. Unofficially, however, it has never ended: Many of the horrors we live with today are rooted in the First World War. The Great War left millions of civilians and soldiers maimed or dead. It also saw the creation of new technologies of destruction: tanks, planes, and submarines; machine guns and field artillery; poison gas and chemical warfare.

Great content, awful narration
Revisado: 02-03-23
As someone who have read a lot about WW 2 but nothing about WW 1, this was a great first book, as it gives a thorough account of WW 1. However, the narration was only bearable to get through by speeding the book up, otherwise I would never have managed to keep listening.

Historia
Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-11-22
I found this book quite boring and not really witty. Weirdly I didn't find Meryl Streep to be a good narrator at all, very stop-start like, almost like she is reading it for the first time. I didn't finish this book.

Historia
For years, rumors of the 'Marsh Girl' have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved.

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.
