Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls. But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Extraordinary
Revisado: 06-13-18
‘Amazing’ doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about, “The Children of Blood and Bone”. This is an epic, and I don’t use that term lightly, novel packed with high-stakes, plenty of tension, and wonderfully developed characters. For me, this has set the bar for what a great novel should live up to. If you like fantasy novels and magic, this is a must-listen.
I thought Bahni Turpin did a fabulous job reading and can't imagine anyone doing better.
Thank you, Tomi, for writing this. I’ve often heard it said that a writer needs to write because the world needs to hear your story, and this is a perfect example of that. Zélie and Orïsha will long live in my heart.

The first new collection of essays by Christopher Hitchens since 2004, Arguably offers an indispensable key to understanding the passionate and skeptical spirit of one of our most dazzling writers, widely admired for the clarity of his style, a result of his disciplined and candid thinking. Topics range from ruminations on why Charles Dickens was among the best of writers and the worst of men to the enduring legacies of Thomas Jefferson and George Orwell.

Stirred and Shaken
Revisado: 02-08-13
I listened to the 28 hours 26 minutes, which covered 107 essays, most which had been published in The Atlantic, Slate, Vanity Fair or the NYTimes during the 2000’s. I had never heard of Christopher Hitchens prior to this and for whatever reason it was that the book caught my attention and on impulse, I purchased it, I will forever be grateful for the unknown motivation that propelled me to do so. I cannot remember the last time that I felt such amazement at someone’s ability to speak so interestingly and well about such a wide variety of topics. Repeatedly I found myself thinking, “How could one person be so brilliant?” Even if I didn’t always agree with the content of what he was discussing or even understand what he was talking about, I found myself amazed at his command of the English language, vocabulary, use of metaphors, wit and sarcasm, sense of humor, and on and on… I kept thinking, “Who talks/writes/thinks like this anymore?” In a world filled with “thx, u2, c u l8r’s, wat u doin?” etc., it was refreshing to hear his words and thoughts, some which made me laugh out loud, some which made me wince but always, they stimulated my mind.
To read a great review of the book by the NYTimes.
Some reviewers on Audible.com felt that Simon Prebble’s narration speed was too fast. I thought his pace was perfect and his reading flawless, however, I'd recommend listening to the sample to make sure you are comfortable with the reading. (I loved it)
Mr. Hitchens passed away in Dec. 2011. I regret not having discovered him decades ago so I could have enjoyed him while he was still alive but I am thankful that I stumbled upon his work and will certainly seek out more of his writing.
Like most people with busy lives that try to balance work, family, health, and as a writer, editing and writing, I don’t take spending 28 ½ hours on anything lightly, but I’d gladly spend 2600 hours listening to his work if it meant I’d be blessed with 1% of his mental ability.
I’d highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys having their intellect not only stirred but also possibly shaken.

Wright unveils the genetic strategies behind everything from our sexual preferences to our office politics - as well as their implications for our moral codes and public policies.

The science behind our motivations and behavior, a lot of it based up Darwin’s theories which basically boils down to most of what we do being driven by our genetic pre-disposition for survival and propagation. A lot of it makes a lot of sense – interesting material. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Historia
Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

Talks about the scientific research that explains what motivates us and why. It also talks about why certain motivational tactics might work, used to work, and may no longer work, depending upon the job needing to be done and the individuals psychological make-up. Very interesting and offers great insights into what to do or not do to motivate people. I found it quite fascinating.

Ayn Rand discusses how a writer combines abstract ideas with concrete action and description to achieve a unity of theme, plot, characterization, and style, the four essential elements of fiction. Here, too, are Rand's illuminating analyses of passages from famous writers, rewrites of scenes from her own works, and fascinating rules for building dramatic plots and characters with depth.

I was thrilled to have stumbled upon this. To actually hear Ayn Rand's words as she expresses her thoughts about the art of writing. I'm not saying that I agree completely with everything that she says or that what used to work for a writer decades ago still applies today but definitely still amazingly powerful and valuable to be able to hear her thoughts and opinions. Loved every minute of it and will undoubtedly listen to it again.

Food. There's plenty of it around, and we all love to eat it. So why should anyone need to defend it? Because in the so-called Western diet, food has been replaced by nutrients, and common sense by confusion—most of what we’re consuming today is longer the product of nature but of food science. The result is what Michael Pollan calls the American Paradox: The more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we see to become.

I loved this book and since listening to it a couple of months ago, have changed my eating habits and rarely eat processed food anymore - not that I used to eat much of it before, but this motivated me to decide that I pretty much can live quite happily without it. I feel the information is presented in a logical way that not only educates but motivates. Loved Scott Brick's narration. Would, and have, recommended this to many people.

Love, love, loved it
Revisado: 08-10-12
I've read too many books to count on the subject of writing so wasn't expecting anything earth-moving when I purchased this other than perhaps "something to remind me to do things that I'd otherwise forgotten about". Boy was I wrong. This was a wonderful book - I enjoyed every moment of. Not only informative - it's always great to hear from someone who has "been there and done that" tell how the real deal is - but it's also full of lots of great tips and motivations AND a fair amount of doses of reality - not always pleasant but heck, that's the real world, right? I loved this book and thank you David Morrell for writing it and for sharing such a wealth of information.

I thought this was a wonderful "read". Although (I thought) I was fairly knowledgeable about diet, nutrition etc., this really opened my eyes to the importance of the Omega 3's & 6's - I was otherwise fairly clueless. I'm truly glad I purchased this book. It's changed the way I'm eating for the good. If, like me, you are confused about the "good fat/bad fat" concept, listen to this book.
