Historia
Essential for anyone interested in Japanese culture, this unsurpassed masterwork opens an intriguing window on Japan. The World War II-era study by the cultural anthropologist Ruth Benedict paints an illuminating contrast between the people of Japan and those of the United States. The Chrysanthemum and the Sword is a revealing look at how and why our societies differ, making it the perfect introduction to Japanese history and customs.

Must read even after all these years
Revisado: 05-26-24
Clarity of arguments with evidential examples using common sense logic. Using this book to describe Japan in my college courses has made a significant impact on my students despite the obvious historical progressions in the societal mores. I recommend it highly for anyone trying to understand Japanese for the first time.

Wonderful content in English language.
Revisado: 02-28-24
Surprisingly solid content in an English scholarly book. Not quite Japanese wabi-sabi per se because of the usage of the Western dialectical methods and metaphors in attempting to convey the depth of Japanese cultural identity. However, it must be the best attempt at it in the English language in the recent years.
The content is much more “shibui” than the youthful voice of the presenter. The youth in the voice deceives the depth of words to the listener who is a relative neophyte in the journey of wabi-sabi-yugen.
Despite this unfortunate failings, I recommend highly as a companion book for those who seek life of experience in wabi-sabi.

Historia
Nick McDonell grew up on New York City’s Upper East Side, a neighborhood defined by its wealth and influence. As a child, McDonell enjoyed everything that rarefied world entailed—sailing lessons in the Hamptons, school galas at the Met, and holiday trips on private jets. But as an adult, he left it behind to become a foreign correspondent in Iraq and Afghanistan. In Quiet Street, McDonell returns to the sidewalks of his youth, exhuming with bracing honesty his upbringing and those of his affluent peers.

Authentic reflections by the 0.1%
Revisado: 09-14-23
0.1% will not divest their own power and privilege for the empowerment of all unless it is forced upon them. This book offers one of many reasons for the rest of humanity to rise up and take that power. Time is ripe for all humanity towards equitable distribution of wealth and resources, here and now.

One of the Must Reading Books
Revisado: 12-15-22
How do we start envisioning an alternative to the current vision of democracy? The author threw a fist sized stone into the sleepy pond in his attempt to wake up its residents. Highly interesting reading with unorthodox ideas. This may become one of the keys to open the door to a new democratic revolution.

An "epoch-defining book" (The Guardian) and "this generation’s Silent Spring" (The Washington Post), The Uninhabitable Earth is both a travelogue of the near future and a meditation on how that future will look to those living through it - the ways that warming promises to transform global politics, the meaning of technology and nature in the modern world, the sustainability of capitalism and the trajectory of human progress. The Uninhabitable Earth is also an impassioned call to action.

Historia
When Jean Tirole won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Economics, he suddenly found himself being stopped in the street by complete strangers and asked to comment on issues of the day, no matter how distant from his own areas of research. His transformation from academic economist to public intellectual prompted him to reflect further on the role economists and their discipline play in society. The result is Economics for the Common Good, a passionate manifesto for a world in which economics, far from being a "dismal science," is a positive force for the common good.

Honest and unflinching, Without Buddha I Could Not Be a Christian narrates each spiritual dilemma that Knitter has struggled with and explains how a Buddhist worldview has allowed him to resolve each one. From the "petitioning" nature of Christian prayer to how Christianity views life after death, Knitter argues that a Buddhist standpoint can help inspire a more person-centered conception of Christianity, where individual religious experience comes first, and liturgy and tradition second.

Historia
Robert B. Reich makes a powerful case for the expansion of America’s moral imagination. Rooting his argument in common sense and everyday reality, he demonstrates that a common good constitutes the very essence of any society or nation. Societies, he says, undergo virtuous cycles that reinforce the common good as well as vicious cycles that undermine it, one of which America has been experiencing for the past five decades. This process can and must be reversed.

This can be a gift from the USA to other nations.
Revisado: 06-15-19
As an outsider to the USA, living and working here as a Permanent Resident with the Green Card, I learned a lot from this book about this country, its current sociopolitical contexts, and how it got here. In reflecting on my own background, it occurred to me that Reich's arguments may be transplanted to Japan, where I was born. I also lived in several other nations, and I think parts of Reich's points can definitely be used in their contexts, as well. I wonder when it will come out in the Japanese language?

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Historia
Shusaku Endo's novel Silence took visual artist Makoto Fujimura on a pilgrimage of grappling with the nature of art, the significance of pain, and his own cultural heritage. His artistic faith journey overlaps with Endo's as he uncovers deep layers of meaning in Japanese history and literature, expressed in art both past and present. He finds connections to how faith is lived amid trauma and glimpses of how the Gospel is conveyed in Christ-hidden cultures.

Thought provoking review.

Lots of personal anecdotes on the subject of how the reviewer sees Japan and Japanese art. There were some gems in the reviewer's theological reflections, though some of "what is called facts" upon which the reflections are made are debatable.
