This narrator is not good, at least, not for this

I am always amazed at how much a narrator can mess up a book for me. He had NO idea how to read a female character and even his reading of Gabriel was like a whiney novice.

I love a good mystery- emphasis on *good.* Unfortunately, this was not a good mystery. The *premise* of the plot was good-enough, but the writer had no idea how to flush out the story line, the characters, or the mystery. The characters were selfish, whiny, and egotistical, demonstrating the current lacking of relationship loyalty (or how to be a shameful friend); while the story fed into the shallowness of our current society. It also heavily fed into the conspiracy theorists' mindset as if attempting to catch their attention for the sake of notoriety. It was painful to listen to but I made sure to listen to the end to see if they justified *any* of it. Nope. They did not. It's definitely not thought-provoking and barely makes it to the scale of entertaining.

Just don't bother unless you're in need of some disappointment.

Narration is awful!

Katherine Mansfield's stories are very much of their time and therefore, written with metaphors and nuances - much like Edith Wharton and Virginia Woolf. Unfortunately, Cathy Dobson reads _all_ the Mansfield stories the same - as if each sentence is supposed to be a surprise. Her tone, timbre, and tempo lead to monotonous droning causing all subtlety and nuance to be buried. The listener cannot discern the metaphor for the lack of empathetic nuance of Dobson's dry, droning, and irritating narration.

Freeman needs to decide if he is writing romance, murder mysteries, or soft porn. His mixture of the 3 is horrendously awful. His plot is messy and convoluted. His characters might be 2 dimensional if he understood people, but alas, they are only 1 dimension. I highly recommend that you do NOT waste your time or money on this terribly predictable and shallow book.
Unfortunately, the narrator was either bad at his job or he didn't like the book either. I'll give Mr. Barrett the benefit of the doubt, Mr. Freeman, not so much.

The racism hurts & the guys are cartoons

The author works hard to be authentic with the presented information. However, the racism and bigotry in the book are really difficult to make it through and I can't tell how much is the author and how much is the reader's interpretation. For the male characters, why are none of the main male characters not from Virginia but sound like they are from the New York tri-state area?
The reader: she has a lovely voice, but she has difficulty pronouncing words like "women" (plural), which she pronounces as "woman" (singular) and that takes me out of the story (that's just one example). Also, she is an annoying reader. All the male voices are constantly the same. They don't vary in tone or tenderness or harshness within each character. The lead detective was annoying enough, written as a 2-dimensional character, but the reader made it worse.
I won't be continuing with this series.

Narration - Uuughhh

I'm only halfway through this book but, I have to say that I'm looking forward to not hearing this narrator again. She has a slight accent (that's not the bothersome part) - possibly Northern U.K. that seems stiff (bothersome), and it does not lend itself to a stiffly written book, in addition to performing male voices very badly (bothersome), she pronounces words outside of typical American accents, and she has a flat delivery (bothersome).
For the writing, as I stated for the first book in this series, the story and plotting are decent but, Hood's writing is stiff and a bit too proper, especially concerning the dialogue. I'm hoping Hood and future narrators improve.

Story - good, writing - stiff, narration - good

Hood has decent ideas for her stories and even plots them out pretty well. But she writes stiffly, like a good English teacher who doesn't want to sound sloppy. Her dialogue is also stiff and proper as if that will make the sheriff and deputies sound more official. The actions and thoughts of her female lead do not match the history that she has given her and sometimes, it seems Hood would rather write love stories than police thrillers. Hood has a lot to learn if she wants to be a good writer, a storyteller, but for her current audience age range, it's probably acceptable. Regardless, I do enjoy Hood's stories, plotting, and potential.
Narration: Farina did a good job, has a good voice, and even did the male voices better than most female narrators.
