Historia
Like every other hobbit, Bilbo Baggins likes nothing better than a quiet evening in his snug hole in the ground, dining on a sumptuous dinner in front of a fire. But when a wandering wizard captivates him with tales of the unknown, Bilbo becomes restless. Soon he joins the wizard’s band of homeless dwarves in search of giant spiders, savage wolves, and other dangers. Bilbo quickly tires of the quest for adventure and longs for the security of his familiar home. But before he can return to his life of comfort, he must face the greatest threat of all.

The intrusion of your putting this on my phone without my requesting it.
Revisado: 11-18-24
Hated being waked up in the middle of the night to find this playing. I have my down version of this book, which I love, and am offended by Audible’s new aggressive marketing.

Historia
Born to a Russian family of lower nobility, Xenia, an eccentric dreamer who cares little for social conventions, falls in love with Andrei, a charismatic soldier and singer in the Empress's Imperial choir. Though husband and wife adore each other, their happiness is overshadowed by the absurd demands of life at the royal court and by Xenia's growing obsession with having a child - a desperate need that is at last fulfilled with the birth of her daughter. But then a tragic vision comes true, and a shattered Xenia descends into grief, undergoing a profound transformation that alters the course of her life.

You have to work a bit at this one
Revisado: 08-14-23
If I treat this as background accompaniment to my routines, I find I have go back and listen again. It’s the opposite of Traitors Purse, which grips you in anxious suspense from the first page. This one slowly develops personalities through what appears to be trivial conversation, while the crime and its causes and perpetrators slowly become evident as the horrendous but logical consequence of the very things—self-interest, triviality, ennui, cynicism—that dominate the culture of the time and place. A brilliant plot in many ways, not gripping till the end, where truth breaks out, so to speak, in response to Campion’s willingness to risk all. And of course Amanda’s courage in hanging in with him to do it.

It is one of the great mysteries of life that in atmospheres of the harshest cruelty, a certain few not only survive, but emerge as beacons of light and life. Father Arseny, former scholar of church art, became Prisoner No. 18736 in the brutal "special sector" of the Soviet prison camp system.

Lovely book, beautifully read
Revisado: 02-28-23
This morning, Clean Monday, I continued the Audible from where I’d left off last night, and the story I read turned out to contain surprisingly important spiritual counsel for me. Something I just hadn’t thought of that will make a significant difference in a project I’m working on. It felt as if Fr. Arseny himself might have reached out to me over all the time and space between us. I will take it to my next confession and Lent will go better. Thank you!

Still my favorite
Revisado: 03-04-22
After 20 or 30 readings I’m still not tired of this one, which has some truly wonderful moments, especially the ending. I might like One Corpse Too Many slightly more, or even Leper of St. Giles, but those are the three I still get excited about listening to—over and over.

Historia
Listen as David recounts the experiences of his rise to successful novelist - his wretched boyhood , the drudgery of his various jobs, his marriage to the boss’ pretty daughter, his flight to the continent, and finally, a reunion with his true love. Tull’s marvelously resonant voice ushers us smoothly through young David’s trials. His ability to move deftly between different accents gives new life to some of the best-known characters in all of literature.

Historia
Leonard Dyke's writing style didn't offend. But all of his work featured unhappy endings: murders. When four people die, including the author, police finally call on Nero Wolfe. Wolfe baits a trap, and when it springs shut, he finds that truth is stranger (and bloodier) than fiction.

Great story, stunning background detail
Revisado: 05-06-19
I find myself listening to these stories over and over and each time discovering more subtlety and richness of detail In setting and plot that I somehow missed the last time. Pargeter/Peters is a consummately intelligent, skilled, and imaginative storyteller. I even took a strong lesson from one of the abbot’s sermons in this one—and always from Cadfael’s warm, compassionate, and canny presence. I count him among my valued friends.
