good story, odd style, average narrator

really really short sentences. why? I don't know. maybe it makes it seem confusing. like you're in a spy novel instead of reading it.
aside from that, the story is good. lots of intrigue and betrayals and betrayals of the betrayals.
the narrator almost sunk this one for me. there is no range to his voice and little emotion. there were plenty of chances for seething anger or distraught fear but it all came across the same. the only distinct voices was the Russian and the New York transplant.

this book is long and it is intricate. it is not something you can casually listen to. that said it is amazing and if you like sweeping epics that drop you into a world that is well developed and wonderous, you need this book.

The plot was average to decent, but the book really turns on the characters and how much you want them to succeed or not.

The book has almost no highs only abject lows. If you don't like depressing books, you may give this a pass but if you use stories to experience emotions, this one captures the essence of loss, confusion, loneliness, need, and regret.
Any additional comments?
Occasionally repetitive feeling, but viewed in context of the storyline, that actually adds to the atmosphere of the novel and helps the characters more relatable.
