a balance of humor and food for thought
Revisado: 07-26-24
Alison's book is very enlightening. She has a way of telling her story that is hilarious, yet she deals with some very serious thought-provoking topics and has the rare ability to achieve balance

Historia
This Audible Exclusive production revisits Charles Dickens’ tragi-comic novel Little Dorrit. Written during the Crimean War, it a story of fortunes won and lost and a masterly portrayal of the failings of Victorian Society, with the ever-present spectre of law enforcement and imprisonment looming over a fearful population. Divided into two parts, Book One: Poverty and Book Two: Riches, Little Dorrit satirises the debtors prisons and the detrimental effect of enforcing a British class system.

Well narrated
Revisado: 05-26-24
As is usual with most of Dickens novels, Little Dorrit has a complex cast of characters in various locales. For one narrator to be able to effectively play all those roles and the reader almost always knowing who the character is based on the voice, is remarkable. The story was well written, mostly easy to follow, and the narration was stimulating.

Historia
In 1918, after four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia to take a job as the lighthouse keeper on remote Janus Rock. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes only four times a year and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Three years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel is tending the grave of her newly lost infant when she hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up on shore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Greatest loves lead to greatest pains
Revisado: 02-06-24
This is one of those stories that just leaves you pondering and wondering. It's not a story that ends happily ever after, but it ends better than it could have. Characters are all very realistic. I saved this to my historical fiction collection, but it's more than historical fiction. The events, conflicts, feelings, pain, and love which transcend the storyline are universal.

Historia
Dorset, 1935. Stationmaster Ted has never cared much for romance. Occupied with ensuring England’s most beautiful railway runs on time, love has always felt like a comparatively trivial matter. Yet when he meets Annie Galbraith on the 8:42 train to Lynford, he can’t help but instantly fall for her. But when the railway is forced to close and a terrible accident occurs within the station grounds, Ted finds his job and any hope of a relationship with Annie hanging in the balance.

Excellent reading and narration
Revisado: 01-10-24
The story itself very much follows typical pattern of Ms. McGurl's books, alternating stories taking place at different times in approximately the same geographic location, gradually revealing different details until the stories almost seem to merge in the end. In this audiobook, using two narrators, a male and a female, was very effective to keep the two story lines somewhat separate. Both narrators were very good.

Historia
One of the '60s most popular teen idols, Annette Funicello was more than America's favorite Mouseketeer. She knew Walt Disney, he chose her for his Mickey Mouse Club. She dated Paul Anka, Fabian, and Frankie Avalon. She made movies with such stars as Mickey Rooney and Fred MacMurray. Then she left it all behind to raise a family. In 1992, she reentered public life to share her battle with multiple sclerosis. In this touching memoir, Annette Funicello tells us that, despite it all, life is more perfect than she'd ever dreamed it might be - and once again proves to be "America's Sweetheart."

A beautiful story told by she who lived it
Revisado: 12-24-22
This autobiography of the late Annette Funicello is well written. Nobody is more qualified as the narrator than Annette herself. Her story is not just about her. it's a glimpse into an innocent past that we will likely never see again.
