Not sure why this is such a beloved book
Revisado: 06-30-17
I always enjoy Jeremy Irons as a narrator but this book just left me feeling "so what" at the end. It's one of those follow-your-dreams books. Not much meat. Mostly fluff.

Historia
Celebrated crime master and two-time Edgar Award winner James Lee Burke returns with a gorgeously crafted, brutally resonant chronicle of violence along the Texas-Mexico border. Sheriff Hackberry Holland patrols a small Southwest Texas border town, meting out punishment and delivering justice in his small square of this magnificent but lawless land. When an alcoholic ex-boxer named Danny Boy Lorca begs to be locked up after witnessing a man tortured to death by a group of bandits, Hack and his deputy, Pam Tibbs, slowly extract the Indian man’s gruesome tale.

Desensitizing violence
Revisado: 01-15-12
I am a fan of James Lee Burke and Will Patton, but unfortunately I could not finish this book. While Burke's novels all have a dark side, this one is a black hole that squeezes the joy out of reading/listening. Aside from the musings of Hackberry Holland on love and mortality, the book is an unremitting series of heinous episodes of murder, torture and mindless violence. When halfway through a minister is crucified by a shadowy Russian mobster, I was numb and really didn't care anymore. That's when I decided to turn it off. The battle between good and evil is at the heart of much great literature, but in this case evil overwhelms the talents of an otherwise great writer.

Very enjoyable--
Revisado: 04-23-11
This is my first encounter with Maugham's work and these are gems. Characters, suspense, humor and pathos in 30 minute --more or less--chunks. The narrator is first rate. Looking forward to volumes 2 and 3.
