I'm a bog fan of Moriatity's books, but this isn't up to her usual. I'm giving up at this point because I'm still waiting for a plot to emerge.

Historia
Set in a beautiful but economically devastated Pennsylvania steel town, American Rust is a novel of the lost American dream and the desperation-as well as the acts of friendship, loyalty, and love-that arise from its loss. From local bars to train yards to prison, it is the story of two young men, bound to the town by family, responsibility, inertia, and the beauty around them, who dream of a future beyond the factories and abandoned homes.

Dismal
Revisado: 09-01-22
I really, really tried to finish this book, if for no other reason than to figure out the point. But I couldn't. The storyline just rambled back and forth between gratuitous fist fights and dull sex scenes. I expected some insight into the cultural impacts of the collapse of steel and coal (which I've lived through), but it never gets there. Dull, pointless, depressing.

Over twenty years ago, the heiress Patricia Lockwood was abducted during a robbery of her family's estate, then locked inside an isolated cabin for months. Patricia escaped, but so did her captors - and the items stolen from her family were never recovered. Until now. On the Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3. For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead - with the suitcase and painting both pointing them toward one man.

Not ready to be the star
Revisado: 04-30-21
The character of Win may work as a supporting character, but he makes for a very annoying lead. He's pretentious and basically annoying. The fact that the story is told in the first person directly to the reader heightens this effect. He doesn't seem the sort of person I'd like to have dinner with.

Tedious
Revisado: 11-09-20
This is the third book of a trilogy. The first book set up a fairly interesting mystery. Unfortunatley, the second and third books failed to keep the storyline alive, and instead degenerated into tedious and shallow tales of romance. This final installment is particularly painful, as grown adults move through teen-like romantic angst on the flimsiest of pretense. There is little story arc, and instead a choppy series of vingnettes that is particularly unsatisfying.
And finally, there are so many references to restaurant menus and tourist traps that one wonders if the book was written by the Chamber of Commerce.

Historia
When the body of 28-year-old social worker Kera Jacobsen shows up on Chief New York City Medical Examiner Laurie Montgomery's autopsy table, at first it appears she was the victim of a tragic yet routine drug overdose. But for Laurie and her new pathology resident, the brilliant but enigmatic Dr. Aria Nichols, little things aren't adding up. Kera's family and friends swear she never touched drugs. Administrators from the hospital where Kera worked are insisting the case be shrouded in silence. And although Kera was 10 weeks pregnant, nobody seems to know who the father was.

Worst dialogue ever
Revisado: 03-09-20
I'm a big fan of well written, natural-sounding dialog. This book has none of that. With virtually every sentence uttered by a character, I wanted to scream, "An acutal human would never talk that way!" Someone actually explained to a doctor the meaning of "paternal grandfather." Spouses converse in lengthy sentences with multiple clauses. Word choices are stilted. It is all just terribly unnatural.
This problem is exacerbated by the terrible, choppy narration. There is a pause every time the narrator starts a new line of text, breaking up each of the lengthy sentences into unmanagable chunks.
Finally, the plot it on the lame side, too. While familial DNA matching has been a TV trope for several years now, the whole arc of the story hinges on it being something new and virtually unheard of, that has to be explained to medical personnel in the most basic of terms.

Historia
Dr. Emory Charbonneau, a pediatrician and marathon runner, disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina. By the time her husband Jeff, miffed over a recent argument, reports her missing, the trail has grown cold. Literally. Fog and ice encapsulate the mountainous wilderness and paralyze the search for her. While police suspect Jeff of "instant divorce," Emory, suffering from an unexplained head injury, regains consciousness and finds herself the captive of a man whose violent past is so dark that he won't even tell her his name.

Unrelatable characters, plot falls apart at the en
Revisado: 02-20-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The main character needed to be more of a real person. It was just not possible to relate to her; I just kept thinking, "A real person would never act this way."
What was most disappointing about Sandra Brown’s story?
The "mystery man" has a secret that is kept until the very end, and turns out to be really quite irrational. Once the secret is revealed, it makes no sense at all that the FBI has been pursuing him, and his whole secrecy and mystique becomes illogical.
Have you listened to any of Jonathan Davis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
What character would you cut from Mean Streak?
I wouldn't really remove anyone.
Any additional comments?
Character development in a story is very important to me. In this one, the doctor was really too thin. She's supposedly this committed, intelligent professional, yet she has no ability to think strategically, can't control her temper, and is totally at the mercy of emotional volatility.

Marginal
Revisado: 10-07-13
First of all, this book had possibly the worst narration ever. The speaker's cadence was choppy and unnatural. Character voices were overdone and cartoonish. It was painful to listen too. And she mispronounced 'chalcedony' for goodness sake - if you're going to read a book based on geology, at least get the mineral names right.
The was compounded by the author's strange style of writing, with many short and incomplete sentences. The overall story was a bit on the implausible side, but I guess OK for the genre.

Judge Daniel Brennan is only days away from achieving a seat on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals bench when he's brutally stabbed to death in his garage. An army of media and law enforcement descend on the case, and thousands of tips pour in from the public. When one tip leads New Jersey policeman Luke Somers to Steven Gallagher, things quickly go wrong, but Luke is instantly glorified for solving the case. But to one man, Luke is no hero. Chris Gallagher raised his brother, Steven, almost single-handedly, and, certain that Steven is innocent, he won't rest until he sets the record straight.

...but found the ending disturbing. It's just another piece of how our society has lost track of the difference between justice and revenge.
The overall storyline, though, was absorbing and made for a great who-dunnit.

Surprisingly entertaining
Revisado: 04-06-13
I was a little apprehensive about reading a book written from the dog's point of view, but Quinn acutally pulls it off without seeming gimmicky. He manages to evoke the personality of a big ol' dog, happy with everything, convinced his owner is the smartest guy in the world, slightly confused about the details. He loves everyone who gives him a pat or a treat, and quickly forgets about any problems.
I've read the whole series now, and they always put me in a good mood.

Two weeks from tomorrow, at precisely 6:11 in the morning, the rapture or apocalypse or Armageddon or whatever else it is you’d prefer to call it, is going to occur. But only in Goodland, Kansas. The Hendersons are caught in the middle as the town—and the family—divides between belief and unbelief in this satirical and illuminating apocalyptic novel.

What would happen if...
Revisado: 01-06-13
What would happen if half your town was convinced that the world would end in a couple of days? That's pretty much what is happening to the town of Goodland. It's not a pretty picture, but I think there's a good chance that this story is what would happen. Not heavily intellectual, but a good read.
